Surfer's terrifying final act as he's bitten in half by shark 'as big as a car' This was a passion of mine as a prewteen and teen. Never saw one of these monsters but we did run into bull sharks. The surfer died a brutal death -Credit:SWNS (SWNS) Friends have recounted the desperate final moments of a young surfer who was attacked by two massive sharks off the coast of Gracetown, Australia as they looked on helplessly. Witnesses report that 29-year-old Brad Smith was surfing off Left Handers Beach, roughly 150 miles south of Perth, when an enormous great white shark "as wide as a shark" struck without warning, snapping his surfboard in two in 2012. • His friends watched in terror as Smith plunged into the water, flailing desperately in a churning mix of water and blood. He fought frantically to survive, shoving the beast away and pounding it in the nose with his fists. But moments later his friends spotted a second shark closing in. After approximately 45 seconds of struggle, they say Smith was pulled below the surface as the water transformed into a deep crimson, reports The Mirror. Then, Smith's lifeless body rose to the surface, "bitten in half". His friends courageously entered the shark-infested waters to recover what remained of Smith, alerting other surfers, "Don't go in there, someone's been bitten." At first I saw one shark and thought it was one of the usual ones you see swimming-around, reef sharks, which don't cause you any trouble. "But these things were massive. When the first one came up a bit I could see its fin and it was almost a yard high. "When it came out of the water with Brad still fighting it, I could see its body was about the width of a car and its open jaws were as wide as a man's arm. "What happened then just ended up in a terrible feeding frenzy. It was awful." The shark was said to be as big as a car -Credit:AFP/Getty Images Experts speculate that he fell prey to great white sharks, which are larger, faster and more aggressive than other species. Whilst shark attacks are uncommon, it's estimated that these creatures claim the lives of four individuals in Australia annually. In the wake of Smith's tragic death, sharpshooters took to the sea on a fleet of boats, aided by police helicopters, in an effort to locate and eliminate the predatory sharks. Tony Cappelluti, an official from the fisheries authority, stated: "If we find them, we have the authority to kill them. Great whites are a protected species, unless one kills a human. "If they've tasted human blood, then they'll remain a problem until we've tracked them down." Smith's close friend Rod Draper described him as a beloved figure in the local surf community. "He absolutely loved life," he said. "There isn't a person who could say a bad word about him." Despite some surfers advocating for the sharks' extermination, Smith's family reportedly urged authorities not to kill the creature, stating they did not hold it responsible for the incident.
