i've never heard of having to not use a black mouse pad to run any mouse.

I've owned one for 2-3 years and use a black mouse mat,no problems.The mat is a steelseries 12x12 inches.

They sort of turn a blind eye to it.I believe if you have an ounce or less,you get a fine.Dpn't know how much though.Now if your dealing,well that becomes some jail time.
