I dont think ping and background programs conflict unless the programs eat away too much memory. But its still a good idea to kill unneeded stuff. Press Crtl-alt-del to bring up Task manager, look at Apps and processes. If you see something you dont need kill it by hitting end process. BE CAREFUL!!!!! Most are needed but Adobe, Quicktime and other stuff is a sure shot. Also click the start/run button type in msconfig/ok. Look at the tab that says startup (?, can't 'member offhand). These are things that start when you boot up. Again you'll see bunches of important and not important stuff. Google each entry and decide what you need to kill to reduce both boot times and improve system resources.
