Can anyone explain the relationship between DSL speeds and Latency?...I have been trying to get my ISP to do something about my high ping and they tell me as long as my latency is below 160 they have met their obligation...Hell with parameters like that why even bother setting a limit...SmileSmile

You watch racing?

If you have a fast car (speed) you win the race. But if you show up on Monday instead of Sunday (Latency) you lose.

It doesn't matter how fast you are if your not in sync with the rest of the group.

If you understood that your probably too smart for your own good...................

I understand that latency is the lag time but what I don't understand is my dsl speeds are in normal limits but the lag is varying considerably. I know the problem is in my ISP providers line but they won't acknowledge anything wrong. I'm trying to educate myself with enough info to argue the point with them...SmileSmile

try some tests through visual route lite

http://www.visualroute.com/download.html

enter a few websites in there tester and screen shot the results on each test. (i don't think you can save or print in the free version)

Perhaps have a friend with a cable connection in your area test the same sites, then compare and see where the time betewwn hops has the biggest discrepancies.

and there http://www.connectionanalyzer.com/

might pick up some data for you to look at

Bart I have been working for a major isp the last ten years. If a ping of 160 is acceptable in their network cloud thats pretty bad. Once you get outside of their own cloud into other fiber backbones its depends on your isp's sla with that provider. I would download pingplotter to look at some realtime traceroutes of their network. www.pingplotter.com They may have issues they know about but may not be able to do much about depending on their budget for that given year. Once you install it change the the tracroute interval to every second. I would first run a traceroute to one of their dns servers. If you need help shoot me a pm. Where are you located? What are your isp choices if you have any?

I'm in Arkansas and My ISP is Centurylink (formerly Centurytel) and that is my only choice outside of satellite...The speed I have is 1.5 that is the fastest available for this area...I have done a traceroute with ping plotter and that is how I know it is their equipment...The first hop which is a bout a mile from me pings at 36-38ms...I was told that that is excessive for anything under a 100 mi...SmileSmile

Do the ISPs implement interleaving over there?  Here we have the option to have that switched off as doing that reduces the latency at the risk of errors.  (Personally, I haven't had this done.)

See http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/interleaving.htm

UPDATE: A field tech showed up today and checked my connection. He said I wasn't getting the full 1.5 and that he was going to check at the port to see if it was getting it there. After about twenty mins he called and said he changed the port that I was connected to. Hopefully that will help. Thanks all for your input...SmileSmile
