Hiya mate...the effect you are describing is called rubber banding.....I had it for alot of the summer , I too am with VIRGIN and eventually got them to admit that it was due to over subscription of the cables in my area...(technical never admitted anything had to threaten to leave)...if you download a "broadband monitor" which runs in the background you will probably find your latency and ping are shit at certain times of the day...I moaned at Virgin and got a few months of reduced bills and they eventually fixed it....Have a good moan..try to talk to someone english(good luck) and I am sure they will sort it out......
