For those that have not seen this photo, I recommend you put aside your squeemish tendencies. Photos like this may be graphic, but they are the only effective means of waking people up in the midst of tragedy. No one will fully understand the gravity of the Boston Marathon attack as the people who were actually there, were injured, or were bravely giving aid to those in need. This photo is not intended to violate personal space, but to commemorate those involved in the aftermath.

This is Carlos Arredondo, the man in the cowboy hat. I encourage you to look him up and learn more about him. He lost 2 sons, one to the Iraq War, and the other to suicide as a result of the first. His past may seem dark, but in the wake of such unfortunate circumstances, I feel for him. He joins ranks with so many others who I consider heroes.

In this photo, Carlos is helping Jeff Bauman. Carlos does not have any medical training or experience. But he was there. And he pinched Jeff's femoral artery while helping to transport him to a hospital to prevent Jeff from bleeding to death. Put yourself in his shoes and ask: would you do the same for a fellow human being?

Thank you Carlos Arredondo.

True it happens all over this globe problem is there is one common reason and until everyone wakes up rises up and destroys them the future will hold more and more as it breeds and spreads....

so it happens all over the world still doesnt make it just. What happens in Tjetjenia aint just, nor in Syria, Afghanistan, Tibet, Korea, Somalia, the old Jugoslavia etc...etc..it aint just, but still it does not give any the right to bomb civilians anywhere.

I totally agree with you, but I don't think anyone is questioning that. They were simply pointing out that we shouldn't be so shocked and upset that someone is capable of such evil acts, when there are thousands who die every day at the hands of merciless and careless humans. Wartorn countries who have been at war for centuries face bloodshed we cannot even fathom. They're saying we need to get off our high horse and come back to reality.

Personally I think it should be a dose of reality to those (especially Americans) willing to listen and take heed. It sickens me how smug and full of ourselves we can be when in reality, we should be thankful that we experience such little of the violence and tragedy that other countries face on a daily basis. It bothers me that so many Americans are convinced that we are the best country in the world, when they are so shallow-minded they can't think outside the sanctity of their own borders. I am a man of pride. I have pride for the accomplishments my nation has made and the progress it has made. The lens which the world sees us through is what puts me to shame. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy of arrogance.

I don't want this to turn into a political or theocratical debate. I just wanted to take the opportunity to tell others that instead of lashing out in hatred, we should be thankful we have what we have, and be conservative about the future. Good still exists...as long as we are willing to let it.

I do not know if I could have done what Carlos did in a time of crisis.

Nor do I ever want to be in a position to find out.

I do have admiration for Carlos and others like the First Responders who do not run away from imminent danger but run to hit to see if they can help.
