Actually the technology works. all this is doing is dragging the signal from satellites and enhancing them. It's works like a data center but this data center is in the air circling a specific area. This signal gets directed down to the ground were different peers can connect up and down speed.

now this technology comes with some downfall. Usually these types of connection comes with a 4 second delay since it has to go from hub to hub OTA this leaves a ping delay. Which means no gaming in these areas, this is not the goal. the theory is make the world more unified by enhancing the area of coverage.

Arent there cheaper and less-mantinance ways of doing that?

The most telling phrase was about the 'regional social networks'. This has nothing to do with some grand plan to help Africa. It has to do with quashing the competition.

The only alternative would to run an oceanic line or put more satellites in the sky. This seems like the cheapest way to bring internet to the dead zones. You have to remember Africa is HUGE and to run internet to the entire country would be VERY risky with the warlords and such. Construction would cost more than UAV's.

I’m just brainstorming here so I could be wrong, I would have to think all options have been explored and this would be those most economical. This could be used for more than just Africa. This could be used in war zones for our troops to be able to access a more stable internet. It’s still a new technology and I’m sure it will get better like all past tech that has been created.

I have done a bit of research on this it seems this is just an addition to current Google and "African internet project" mark zuckerberg is not a dumb guy if he can get this to become success he can boost revenue for all social networks.

The military already has milstar and its replacement currently underway. Which is already more than enough needed and can relay any data back and forth to soldiers in the field from the various command centers. Besides, for this kind of thing money is no object so 'economical' isnt really an issue.

That pretty much solves it then. I don't buy the "lets help Africa", it's more like there is massive ad-rev potential there.

Aahh. Good point. I hadn't even thought of filling in holes in satalite coverage. If they can fly them high enough without interfearing in airtraffic, that would be very effective. The uav company specializes in solar powered uavs so i would doubt flying them over the clouds.

"The so-called ‘atmospheric satellites,’ which would fly at a height of around 12.5 miles (20 km), are capable of carrying out many of the functions of higher-placed orbital satellites but are cheaper and more versatile, according to TechCrunch."

taken straight from the artical and also answers your question :P

Oops. Missed that lol.

I was curious about the solar panels. It turns out that if you are willing to pay a shit-ton of money you can get panels that approach 50% efficiency. Only worth it though if you can control your angle to the sun. The power they get on the spacestation must be fantastic compared to budget panels at sealevel.

solar tech. has gotten so good that the government and utilities companies will pay you to have them on your roof.

i know amerenUE (Missouri & illinois Electric) will pay you a rate if you put KwH into the grid. and the government will give you tax breaks for being Eco-Friendly

The tech is good... but until more people use it, it's still outrageously expensive.

Even if you are in an ideal city, putting solar panels on your house is stupid. They won't pay themselves off for 20 years.

Here's another article on it.

http://www.itproportal.com/2014/03/05/a-closer-look-at-facebooks-motives-in-acquiring-its-fleet-of-titan-drones/

Those things are planned to fly at 65000 feet! They apparently havent even finished building their first one though.

Also an interesting note... The article says that he's still going to need towers with fiber run to them.
