The big Target scam hit people in their own hometowns, not while they were traveling.  And, it hit everyone.  Not just certain banks.  No bank can fully protect your account from scammers.

Debit cards do not offer quite the same protection as credit cards, even when they are backed by VISA or Mastercard.  When shopping online especially, use a credit card.  If you're traveling and using a debit card, alert your bank before you go.  Quite often, Transaction Review Departments will block a debit card when it's being used out of town because they think it's fraud.

P.S.  We see MORE fraud from debit cards used in Wal-Mart stores than anywhere else!!!

image a simple situation in which you cross the border to Canada or Mexico and stay overnite at a local hotel or motel that cost $100, after you come back to the US and find out that the bill charges $1,000. Then, your on your own the fight off the charge by using your time and effort. That is why using credit cards provide your better security protection and the bank issuing the can handle those issues with ease.

This is a very unlikely scenario because you are paying upfront, same as cash, when you are checking in. I use my debit card in the US all the time and I have never had a problem. The real issue is debit and credit card cloning, but this could very well happen at your local corner store.
