Canada will come to a standstill tonight at 8:30 Eastern time.  Our most iconic rock band, The Tragically Hip ("The Hip" to most of us), who many outside of Canada will likely have never heard of, will play what is very likely their final show after 30+ years. Lead singer Gord Downie, a poet the equivalent of Leonard Cohen (also a Canadian), was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer this year. In July, they embarked on a tour across most of the country, a celebration for their fans. The show tonight will be broadcast by the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) commercial-free on TV, radio, and the Internet. Most communities across the country will have free live-viewing events in theaters, parks, and hockey arenas.

The shows on their tour have been poignant, and each night had a different set list. There were plenty of tears at each show, and I expect much the same tonight as a country gathers together to say their farewells to a band many of us grew up with, and who determined from the outset to make their last tour a celebration rather than a maudlin wake. I first saw them 30 years ago and the cover was $5. There were maybe 40 people in the room. They've since played for millions of fans in sold-out stadiums across the county.

I rearranged my work schedule for today so I can get home in time to watch this. Im not a huge Hip fan, but MASSIVELY respect what they have done for the Canadian Music Scene of which I am a HUGE fan of!  I am sure I will shed a tear at some point. Gordie is up there with Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton Lenord Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot for one of the greatest song writers of all time. It is sad but at the same time, he gets to go out how he wants... to the love of the fans!! Heres to Gordie getting a few years atleast of time with family

What an absolutely amazing show! I had a few friends lucky enough to be there live doing facebook live videos, saw some great shots! So humbling and sad! They have done so much for Canada. I did shed a tear at one part, no not at any of the speeches he made or not even when Rob (lead guitarist) wiped a tear from his eye. There was a spot about 3/4 of the way through the concert, I dont even recall what song was playing, will have to recheck when I rewatch the recording, but it was a good long solo and Gordie just stood there looking off into the crowd, you could see the thought, the love, the devotion in his face, he just stood there, took a deep breath, nodded once and went back to the mic. Most moving moment of the night for me
