drywall/framing question

I am hanging drywall in my basement, and I have come across a stud that bows in towards the basement about 3/4".  It is an exterior wall.  The stud is a 2x4.

I don't really want to plane that much off a stud.  Replacing the stud doesn't seem like an option either since it has plywood and house wrap attached to it.

Could I sister another stud to it, then plane it?  Or is there another option?

My contractor friend says scabbing another 2x4 onto it from top to bottom..........and securing it at the top and bottom into the cross pieces (diagonal screws or the little metal brackets)...........should do fine to keep the strength up after planning.

AS LONG AS.........there isn't something else going on that is forcing that bow in the first place???  Leaking water and that sort of thing...................or an outer wall problem.

Water had gotten inside the wall due to a window not having proper caulking, but I took care of that issue.  The stud does have some water stains.

You will want to remove any dry rot if present.  If there isn’t any sistering a second 2X4 will work.   Question though with it being bowed,  did it pull the outside sheeting in with it when it moved?

There is no dry rot, just staining.  It didn't pull in the sheeting.

Screw into place ,trim and call it a day

Too much work to plane it. Mark the bow with a straight edge and roughly cut it out with a jigsaw or reciprocating saw and then sister it for a nailer for your drywall.
