Not just manifold meanings; EVERY noun in German has a definitive article.  Can't just have 'the' like English.  Has to have masculine, feminine, neutral assignations:  Der, Die, Das...  Really chapped my ass;  seemed so unnecessarily tedious.  A foreign-grammar anachronistic time sink.
