I'm a contract worker and technically have been unemployed for about 4 years because I haven't worked for an employer that makes payroll taxes based on my salary. Anybody that doesn't collect unemployment benefits isn't counted as unemployed, even if they've lost everything, homeless and on welfare. The feds use employer DE6 forms which are used to submit federal payroll taxes to verify employment and they don't specify whether the new employee works 1 hour per week or 40 hours per week. They use all kinds of tweaks to make them look more favorable. It's all smoke and mirrors. Economists calculate using something called the U-6 scale, and if you include all of the people who had full time employment prior to 2008 compared to now, the actual unemployment number is more like 11.9%.

I was watching that broadcast live when it happened here in the San Francisco area. As soon as they showed the names on the screen I knew somebody fucked up and was going to get fired over it. If I recall they let some intern make some calls to get the names of the flight crew and then aired the names without anybody checking to see if they were real. That's fuck-up on a major scale.

My town is on the approach for San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose airports, so needless to say there is always some air traffic going overhead. We're also not far from a major air force base and see a lot of big transports and bombers, and I always find myself looking up to figure out what they are. We've seen Airforce One fly over us a number of times over the years. A really neat web site I found last year takes the guessing out of it. You can open up the following web page and see exactly what commercial aircraft are flying over you in real time. It gives the airline name, type of plane and flight plan, as well as altitude. Some flights have web cams in their cockpits and you can even tap into those.
