I came across this video a little while ago with lots of still pictures from behind the scenes on the Star Wars sets.

When I graduated high school in 1977 I went to work for my uncle just north of San Francisco in San Rafael. I worked late evenings a lot and always noticed a lot of activity in the warehouse next door to my office, so one night I walked over to take a look to see what what going on. A man met me at the back door and we started talking and he invited me in for a beer. Once inside I was amazed to see that the warehouse was full of men building great big models for the upcoming movie "The Empire Strikes Back". Needless to say I spent every minute I could over there, became good friends with a couple of the model makers and even got to meet George Lucas on a few occasions. They were always coming over to borrow tools and our forklift and told me I was welcome to come over any time as long as I promised to never take pictures of anything, so I unfortunately I didn't. Many of the pictures in the link I provided were taken in that warehouse in San Rafael, and most of the workers I knew went on to be the initial employees of Industrial Light and Magic, which is still going strong today and doing special effect for lots of movies.
