I like what Cavey suggest Bart and love your proposed system. Win7 home is fine. I dont use any of the features in my ultimate. I turn off all the pretty stuff. Looks plain as jane and saves me lots of memory along with all else I turn off. It is boot speed I want and I use just over 500mb on a clean boot. Then again I have zero antivirus/firewall/defender or spyware protection or any other useless software. Nothing runs in my trey but the clock, volume, wifi and the show desktop thing I am going to turn off. yes if... you are willing to hack the campus routers/servers. Your probably being forced to use a proxy server to help control the bandwidth and content. The proxy holds the allow list of sites. I bet port 80 is blocked and all traffic is pass through the proxy. you dont get to talk to much on the outside of the network except that proxy server if I had to guess. Port 80 is WEB port so if you try and go to www.yousomething.com and it does blocks you.. that is a proxy server because the routher will not contain the allow and disallow list as the proxy server will. If it gets to any site you want then port 80 is not blocked. SMTP Port 25, pop 110 and other related email ports are passed through the proxy but no context list is needed to block. Just the ports are open and are passed through the proxy still you having to pass through the proxy. but maybe things have changed or i over looked something.... it would be best in my opinion if they have it setup to prevent you from doing things they dont want you too... i would be careful in what you try and do... shit is getting smarter and smarter and if on my network... i would catch you. get a cell phone and teather from it. there is a solution that will work for the first 5gb or so.... lol
