  1. If they catch the psycho, they sould strap a stick of dynamite to him and light it!
  2. Next to cheaters, smack talkers and whinners are the worst. BAN THEM and make the server how you want it. I've admin'd servers since the Quake 2 days and I had zero tolerance for this crap.....insta-ban. The server is XI's and if someone is making playing on it no fun, they should be gone. On a side note....at least these days we have GUID so it's tough to get back on the server unless you're using a keygen. In the old days I had to ban by IP and most people had dynamic IP's so I'd have to ban them several times....and I would.
  3. Sounds like a failing router. How old is it? Try changing the port she is plugged into. I've seen specific ports go bad many times. I've thrown away more routers than I can remember over the years.
  4. Excellent!
  5. I don't use firefox but your connection has been set to use a proxy server on the internet. This is common with malware. In IE, if you have the menu bar enabled, click on TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>CONNECTIONS>LAN SETTINGS and UNCHECK the "USE PROXY SERVER". After that, reboot your PC into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, update malwarebytes and run another scan while in safe mode. If you download and install hijackthis you can paste the scan results here and get more help.
  6. I can't remember exactly how long since I first played on an XI server, I believe it was between 5 and 7 years ago.....COD2. I still play there today! Thanks XI!!
  7. What's wrong with your current system other than it's 32 bit? An i5 setup is plenty fast. Hell, I'm still using an old (but kickass) Intel 865 mobo with a Q6600 (overclocked), AMD 6870, Win7 64 and 4GB of ram. It plays every game I toss at it....I use an SSD. If you have an itch to spend money, buy yourself an SSD and install your games on it. That will give you a nice boost!
  8. [b30]Goat I got that drive today. I had the thought of just uninstalling BF3 and then installing it on the new drive. Will that help with my loading speed or will I still bottle neck at the slower drive because of the OS? Also Pinglo what do you use to make your clone? Thanks one and all. Now you're thinking! The game will load much faster on the SSD, not as fast as having OS and everything on the SSD, maybe a couple seconds longer. The game probably uses DX and that is still on the hard drive, but a few seconds is no big deal. Most of the loading will come from the SSD.
  9. In XP you have first uninstall the old driver, then reboot into safe mode and install the new driver from safe mode. This is better than rolling back or using system restore.
  10. Post a hijackthis log and you should also check out the Windows event viewer (system) for any clues.
  11. Shamu At this point I an almost sure it's an update issue. I just did another system restore on my PC and got through a map without a crash. I am almost convinced it is not hardware, game or heat related. Simply too coincidental with my laptop now doing the same thing and I had not gamed on the for weeks until this business trip. One problem I am having is perhaps my own ignorance, I can't get System Restore to go back as far as I like even by selecting "more restore points". I used to get a calendar from which I could select a date, it's not that way anymore. It gives you a few dates but only goes back about 3-4 weeks of options. Rather than just blindly guessing.... Download and run hijackthis and post a report here so we can see. DO NOT attempt to use the program to delete anything, it's more of an expert type of tool. The log file is VERY helpful to us computer guys to figure out if you have a software/malware/virus problem. Also, if this is a virus, it will infect the system restore points so it will do no good to restore. I suspect if the problem went away after a restore, you don't have a virus.
  12. Why not just add in the drive and install your apps and games to it? You'll avoid a lot of trouble. You can also set a ReadyBoost cache to it to help speed up windows.
  13. You can verify the beep code from either your mobo manual or from an internet search. You should always keep a cheap video card laying around for troubleshooting. They really do come in handy. Drop me a PM if you're interested in a brand new X1300 PCIE. I keep a few laying around that I pulled from Dell's at work. It's a great card for troubleshooting because it doesn't require a separate power connector at all. $13 shipped if you're interested.
  14. Excellent choice in 2600K and setting up the system with IRST. These Z68 systems with that combo are blazing fast.
  15. Whenever you get a blue screen it's important to note the offending file shown. It's usually .sys or .dll file listed as the problem. It really helps in the diagnoses of the problem.
  16. Dear God, if you're not comfortable with working on your PC DO NOT REMOVE THE CPU COOLER! You can't just "check" your thermal compound. If you pull your cooler you'll have to clean it with a xylene-based cleaner, put on new thermal compound (properly) and re-attach your cooler.....definately not something I recommend a noob to do. If you suspect the CPU is overheating, there's a lot of tools out there that monitor your CPU temps....check with your mobo manufacturer. Run the CPU at 100% load and see exactly what the temp is BEFORE you go messing with the cooler!
  17. As stated, you won't have to reactive your computer with a CPU change. It's not a big deal anyway, the web activation works 99% of the time regardless of how many hardware changes you make. If it doesn't, a quick call to Microsoft and they'll reactive it for you over the phone....I've done it plenty of times on customer PC's. I don't why people freak out about doing this, it's really no big deal. Good luck with your new system!
  18. NightmareXI cleaning the card is not the solution at a 4 weeks old rig LOL go with a total fresh install of the graphic drivers this can be caused by many things....but thats the first thing to start with... have done a little research but I have to hurry a bit and will post some stuff later edit: bios version of your mainboard? DOH! 4 weeks won't gather much dust! LMAO I think you nailed the problem as it clearly says on the Asus BIOS revision history that the older BIOS has a random crash issue.
  19. I forgot, pull your video card and CLEAN it. It could also be a simple overheating issue. Do you know your idle and load video card temps?
  20. Yep, that's an nvidia driver issue or a sign of the card starting to fail. This can also point to a possible error with the hard drive.....it might be corrupting data. I recommend a few things: 1) Browse to the c:\nvidia folder on your hard drive and delete it and all contents. 2) Run check disk to clean up the file system in case there's trash from the crash. Open windows explorer, right click on your C: drive icon>properties>tools>CHECK NOW. Windows will ask if you want to "schedule a check", select YES then reboot the PC. 3) Download Ccleaner and run it: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ 4) Download and install the newest video card driver from nvidia. Windows 7 handles video card driver updates very well. However, I'm old school so I usually uninstall the old driver, reboot and install the new driver with Windows running in VGA mode. If you're troubleshooting a problem, that's the best method.
  21. Shamu From the advice in game and hear it sounds like the first thing is to clean it out. I have had the PC since Jan 2010 and have never been inside. In fact I have never been inside any PC. Some people say to turn up the fans...... I have no idea of how you do that. I'll TRY to take the sides off, buy some canned air and give it a good blow job to clean out the pipes. BTW, how did such a sexual act become called a blow job? That would not be a good thing. I will also try to make sure things are seated properly. Now I just need to get the nerve up to look indie the case, if I can figure out how to open it. 2 years and never opened the case....you might want to use a vacuum cleaner to get started. There could be a ton of dust. You're definately going to need to remove the video card to give it a good cleaning.
  22. The servers have been empty the past week. Maybe the current rotation is unpopular? Please come and play people!
  23. Lockup problems must be systematically diagnosed. Wizid offers excellent starting advice, you need to check the windows system logs to see if an event was recorded. What operating system are you using? What is your hardware configuration? Usually, video card issues will start with some screen artifacts. Are you seeing any video anomolies just prior to the freeze? The next step is a clean and reseat. Take some canned air and blowout all the dust from your case interior. Remove the video card and blowout the cooler and fan. Remove the RAM modules and carefully reseat them all....DO NOT just check they are tight, pull them all out and reseat. Make sure the power supply, CPU cooler and fan are clean by using the canned air on them. Reseat all connecting cables to the mobo. The number one problem with system freezes is the system power supply. Over time they lose effeciency and the current to the voltage rails fades away. What power supply do you have and how old is it? When working on customer systems the power supply is the first component I troubleshoot after I've exhausted software/malware, OS issues and dirt. Since most you don't know me....a little background. I've been building and repairing computers for 25 years.

    Hello All

Thanks for the warm welcome! Pete - I've really enjoyed fragging with you, especially on the shotgun map. You ROCK at shotgun! Honestly, it's refreshing to have my ass kicked now and then by some of you guys. I'm so used to winning on other servers I need a dose of humility now and then. It reminds me of the old days of Quake 3 where there was so many awesome fraggers playing.
  25. Another tip....make sure you ram is running at 1600. These Asus mobos are very conservative in AUTO mode and you usually have to crank on the RAM to get it humming. Also, the stock Intel cooler is good for 4GHz+ overclocking on the 2600K. The only reason you'd need more is if you're planning on going to the extremes.......which is fun as a hobby, but not very practical for a long-term gaming rig.
