I am classified as a combat Veteran but almost feel guilty about the designation as a requirement to join the VFW.
I served from Nov 61 to Nov 64 which qualifies me as a combat Veteran for the VFW.
Qualifying for the VFW at one time required service during a period of conflict. Not sure if it is still a qualification or not.
Anyway Nam was just warming up when I got out and being qualified as serving as a combat veteran is quite a stretch for me. None the less I qualified.
I did however get around as an Army guy with a 3 year service commitment;
Fort Jackson, Basic
Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Welding School
Fort Sill, OK, Post / Combat Engineers
Temporary Duty 4 months in Thailand, SEATO exercise
Toul France, 3rd Echelon Engineers
Got to see and experience a lot, not to mention a good way to grow up a bit.
