If you're using BT broadband or a flavour of it resold by someone else, there is a possibility that you're seeing the effects of recent work and repair they have been doing on the network. Locally, I usually see a Grade A line with ping down to around 39ms. It shot up briefly to around 125-130ms! Strangely, in game, there was only a slight worsening to 160ms. Everything settled down in about 24 hours and appears normal now. If your problem continues, I suggest you do a traceroute to establish where the hold-up is occurring.
