He downloaded a copy from Steam (1st mistake) and while it will run fine in single player mode, multiplayer won't run at all. The game closes before it even gets to the menu. Has anybody successfully loaded and run COD2 on windows 8.1 and then tried to run it from Steam? I've done some searching online and this seems to be a common problem with the disk version as well. Thanks, LOM Awards

Sometimes it makes a difference if you "run as administrator". Try that for loading and running. Does 8.1 have a compatibility mode where you can run as an earlier version of windows? Don't forget to load the patch! Awards

Not sure where to go from here. Can't find anything exactly like his problem online. Awards

I would, but the game crashes before the menu screen comes up. It starts to load then just locks up, so no access to any of the settings. Awards
