Computer crashed dead twice while playing WAW last week. Played a game or two of COD2 during the week, and it was fine. Crashed dead again today while playing COD4. Took it apart for a good cleaning, but things weren't that dirty. While it was apart, powered things up and noticed a case fan turning erratically. Replaced that fan and everyting is running rosey again. Could one fan draw enough amps to force the power supply to shut down under load?

So beer, it hasn't failed since the new was installed? Perhaps the old one was dragging enough it would pull more amps, thus surpassing the power supply amps. Dang stuff just don't last forever, like beer!

No, I can't tell if "A" fan is bad while the machine is running. Once it's tested and proven faulty, so be it. My computer has seven fans. With the new one in place, the box runs much quieter and functions as it always did. That's just my diagnostic guess, and I'm asking others for their opinions/experiences. If I'm an idiot for asking, well, so be that also.

An erratic fan that might be in the death throws could bind and thus cause the spike in amp pull or even a short circuit.

sorry for being a jerk I just thought that you obviously already answered and solved the problem.a shorted fan or power cable could cause a crash  and seems like you were knowledgeable enough when cleaning out the case to notice the fan acting up and change it already-

canned air 101

Note canned air ......dis connect fan power and  PSU to wall then hit start button to drain cap's,  some will spray fluid and cause a short

Do Not use air to spin clean any fan for your generating power  (37v) more than Motherboard needs while doing so , will cause damage  to MB

or hold it from spinning  if can't  remove power connector

A bad fan most likely would not result in pulling extra current.  More likely it was not moving enough air and the computer overheated at some point. Check the north bridge. Those tend to get very hot and usually have little cooling.

It's also possible that it could be putting a lot of electrical noise back into the mobo (if it's one that plugs into the mobo) but that's not very likely.
