From what I read a few months back when they first announced the project, it's just neural-nets hard-coded onto silicon instead of being simulated like they are now. A "brain-like chip" (aka neural-nets on silicon) is about as far from real AI as a wood screw is from a battleship.

Let us not forget that battleships were once built with wood screws. At some point (in the not too distant future) I believe AI will exist, although not in a terminator or Matrix sort of way. At least I hope not. Awards

Us making machines, those machines rising against us and wiping us out. As humans learn from experience and mistakes, yes the AI will probably do that but what I see is that when we make these things, we ourselves are becoming less 'human' because there will a LOT less human interaction with things and we depend WAY too much on technology. I can imagine what this world would be like if we were thrown back into the stone age. People might actually start to socialise in the old fashioned way and realise that with the technology they depended so much on: Oh shit. What do I do now? I am so bored without technology I have no idea what to do. (Well that will be what I think might happen, some people wouldn't be affected so much because we have books!) eidolonFIRE and little_old_man 2 Awards

Let us not forget that battleships were once built with wood screws. At some point (in the not too distant future) I believe AI will exist, although not in a terminator or Matrix sort of way. At least I hope not. ... battleship... wooden ship.... my analogy stands. The best efforts to date of making AI only result in imitations of specific parts of intelligence. We can write programs that pretend to be AI but really it's just an imitation. Watson imitates memory (questions and answers trivia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watson_(computer) Cleverbot imitates Social interaction: http://www.cleverbot.com/ etc. There are more but they all fall VERY short of creating any sort of real intelligence. Here is a wiki excerpt on human intelligence. If humans posses all these cognitive abilities, imagine how much smarter machines would have to be to overthrow us. It's not likely. Human intelligence Main article: Human intelligence Human intelligence is the intellectual capacity of humans, which is characterized by perception, consciousness, self-awareness, and volition. Through their intelligence humans possess the cognitive abilities to learn, form concepts, understand, and reason, including the capacities to recognize patterns, comprehend ideas, plan, problem solve, and use language to communicate. Intelligence enables humans to experience and think. Edited August 8, 2014 by eidolonFIRE
