Well, my oldest daughter is about to turn 16 and inherit my wife's car....so the wife has decided that she wants a Mini Cooper S. I was curious if any Mini owners in this clan could give me their opinions of their vehicles? She wants the hard-top hatch back....i.e. the standard body style. I will probably buy her a 2012...I always prefer to let some other sucker take the first couple years hit of depreciation on vehicles.

Thanks for any input.

Do you actually own one, or are you just providing an opinion based on nothing other than what your own preconceived notion of "too much money" is? My wife could be asking me to buy her a new BMW or Lexus, so I see this as good deal, as long as she will actually be happy with it. I can buy a 2012 Mini that is fully loaded and with very low miles for around $20k.

I'm a mechanic and we've sold quite a few S' from work.

If you're getting one with the low profile tyres the road noise is horrible, it almost sounds like all 4 wheel bearings have failed and the steering needs constant correction to keep the car in a straight line.

The chains give huge problems with stretching, although this is normally caused by low oil levels in the engine due to the oil consumption being ridiculous.

BMW say a consumption of 1 litre per 1000 miles or so is acceptable. So you will have run 12 litres through it between services.

The gearbox's and PAS pumps have been upgraded on the later models so they shouldn't give you any problems.

Oh and don't be fooled into believing that because it's German that it will be reliable. The days of German engineering being king are long gone. They're just as shit as everything else now

Maintenance is very critical the correct synthetic oil

They recommend service  every 15000 mi I would go no more than 7500 mi

Turbos like clean oil

They have some timing chain issues & turbo issues when not using correct oil or not changing it

Poor quality oil filters will collapse
