Ok so I ran across this on the web and figured I would ask the people from Canada in our clan. Are Baby Walkers really banned in CA? They are banned from retail stores being sold at garage sales, flea markets or on street corners. it is also illegal to import, or advertise them for sale And if you have one in your house it is frowned upon and you should burn it so it cant be used again. The reason being is because the babies hurt themselves for example they fall down stairs or the burn themselves on ovens. They also said that it doesn't teach babies how to walk. So anyone here from CA that can help clarify this, it  would be greatly appreciated! :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_walker

In Canada, the sale of baby walkers was banned on April 7, 2004.Canada is the first country in the world to ban the sale, importation and advertisement of baby walkers. This ban extends to modified and second hand baby walkers, including those sold at a yard sales or flea markets. The Consumers Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) changed the items that were allowed to be sold at such sales. Owners of baby walkers may be fined up to $100,000 or sentenced to up to six months in jail.

I just don't understand why is CA the only place to do such a thing? they aren't the only babies with walkers that get hurt lol.

I disagree. As a father I can attest to the fact that it is impossible to watch your child, pet or anything 100% of every minute of everyday whether they are awake or asleep. It's that moment you look away to flip your eggs, put a bowl in the dishwasher, etc that these mistakes can occur. The issue is the walker, not the parent. This country saw fit to ban it for its dangerous potentials and that I have to agree with (one mans opinion) ;) Edited by KingStinger!

@KingStinger im not saying that you will be able 100% of the time, but shouldn't you be able to at least the majority of the time? Why do you think it was a good idea to ban em?

Stinger is absolutely correct, kids can't be watched 100% of the time and all it takes is a couple seconds for a child to put themselves in a dangerous situation.  But kids put themselves in dangerous situations frequently until they become adults and we as parents can only do the best we can and teach them right from wrong.

I do feel that banning walkers is overkill. Regardless of whether an infant is in a walker, crawling, or just learning to walk on their own, anyplace an infant can fall down steps should have a child-proof gate. Just like cabinets and toilet seats should have child-proof locks and swimming pools should have fences around them with locking gates.  It's just common sense and I don't need the government to tell me how it should be done.

Just out of curiosity, if a family lives in a 2 story house and fails to put up a barrier to prevent the child from falling down the stairs, are the parents guilty of child neglect in Canada?

yes majority of the time is parenting. 100% is pure insanity and impossible. A parent should always be attentive to the whereabouts of there children at that age. But in a split second life can change. And Murphy's law says it will happen when you least expect it :)

Hey Steve, I had to consult my wife on the issue. Her response was "it's not child neglect but a question of lack of supervision". "Child services would end up paying them a visit but only to shake their finger at them".. She said this is no different if the child fell out a two story window"..

I hope this helps.

I think they were an issue years ago. They had very mobile wheels and that with a flight of stairs meant to many fatalities for young children. Deaths that could have been prevented.

As a parent Flash, no one in Canada thought anything about them being taken off the market.

@@PimpedOutPete but they banned em only 10 years ago. For a law, that is not that long ago. I would understand it if there was an issue with em when the first came out. but not now. we have better technology to keep kids safer. BUt still why wouldn't you put a gate up in front of the stairs if that is were your child is?

I totally agree Flash, it seems odd that it took them so long to ban the product when it deemed to be one of the most dangerous baby product on the market as far back as 1994.

My girls used them when we lived in the states and by the time we relocated, they grew out of them and my wife and I didn't give the ban a thought.

I can see the safety issues for kids, but I think they should reintroduce them for adults that get too drunk to stand up. They could save hundreds of lives each year in Canada preventing drunks from falling down and hitting their heads.

according to Wikipedia ( which cant really be trusted) they were invented as far back as 1440s. with that being said I still don't understand why they hadn't banned them back in like the 60s. it took CA all the way until 2004 for to ban em? kinda odd. the technology in '04 was a lot better than the 60s and 70s. even today I would think that they are made to be a lot safer then that of the ones made in '04.
