bds1961 got a reaction from Leadfinger in Car Tires Recommendations
One thing I have found out is that car makers design there cars to use a certain tire design to give the best all around performance for what the car is designed to do. There for a similar tire to what is on there would maintain what you are use to. If you move up to a more performance oriented tire that has a stiffer or lower sidewall it will give you better performance in the turns at the expense of a smooth ride, Like wise if you go with a touring tire it will be comfortable and quite but may be a little bit looser in the turns. I use to drive on average about 40k miles per year in the SF bay area. Most of those mile were put on my 2005 jeep grand Cherokee with the 5.7 hemi. After I wore the first set of tires out ( in 1 Year ) I put some Goodyear tires on it that were supposed to be good all around tires, It wondered all over the place like a fat woman in a candy store. The tires sucked big time. It wasn't the brand but the design of them. The same went for my Porsche, originally it had Goodyear tires that were specifically made for that year and rim ( 1988 euro spec 930 ) that no one else manufactured for. those tires were only good for about 6 to 8 k miles (super soft compound) a few years after having the car another manufacturer made a tire that would fit the car. Bought a set put them on and after about 600 miles took them right off. they were half the price of the Goodyear's and only provided about half the traction. Seeing that you like high speed bursts I go back with a minimum of what came with it. you know already what they will do at high speed .

Welcome to the wonderful world of having a significant other. If I didn't have the oil changed on my daughter's and wife's cars, they would do the same thing. About 10 years ago my wife said the Expedition was making some funny noise and when I checked the oil it was over 4 quarts low and she had been ignoring the "idiot" light on the dash. Ever since I've been doing it when needed.

Women shouldn't give automotive advice just like men shouldn't give relationship advice.

bds1961 reacted to little_old_man in MAXINE MAKES HER POINT
Great post Johnny.
Just to give you an idea how things have changed in the US, about 3 years ago at a high school here in the SF bay area Hispanic students were celebrating Cinco de Mayo at the high school by proudly wearing clothing with the Mexican flag. When some white students decided to wear clothing with American flags the Hispanic students complained to the school administration that they were being racist, and the white students were ordered to either change their clothing or be sent home. The reasoning by the school was that they feared there would be fighting between the students.
The white students not feeling that they were fairly treated decided to sue, and a lower court sided with the school. Yesterday the supreme court also sided with the lower court and the school and wouldn't even hear the appeal.
So the Hispanic kids are free to wear clothing with the Mexican flag while living in America, but the white kids aren't free to wear their own flag for fear of offending the immigrant kids.
Welcome to the new world order.

THIS IS THE BEST MAXINE EVER, EVER, ..................EVER!
RIGHT ON MAXINE!!!
This is the best analogy yet!
Leave it to Maxine to come up with a solution for the mess that America/Canada/UK/Germany/Australia/NZ is now in economically.
I bought a bird feeder. I hung it
on my back porch and filled it
with seed. What a beauty of
a bird feeder it was, as I filled it
lovingly with seed.
Within a week we had hundreds of birds
taking advantage of the
continuous flow of free and
easily accessible food.
But then the birds started
building nests in the boards
of the patio, above the table,
and next to the barbecue.
Then came the shit. It was
everywhere: on the patio tile,
the chairs, the table ...
everywhere!
Then some of the birds
turned mean. They would
dive bomb me and try to
peck me even though I had
fed them out of my own
pocket.
And others birds were
boisterous and loud. They
sat on the feeder and
squawked and screamed at
all hours of the day and night
and demanded that I fill it
when it got low on food.
After a while, I couldn't even
sit on my own back porch
anymore. So I took down the
bird feeder and in three days
the birds were gone. I cleaned
up their mess and took down
the many nests they had built
all over the patio.
Soon, the back yard was like
it used to be ..... quiet, serene....
and no one demanding their
rights to a free meal.
Now let's see......
Our government gives out
free food, subsidized housing,
free medical care and free
education, and allows anyone
born here to be an automatic
citizen.
Then the illegals came by the
tens of thousands. Suddenly
our taxes went up to pay for
free services; small apartments
are housing 5 families; you
have to wait 6 hours to be seen
by an emergency room doctor;
Your child's second grade class is
behind other schools because
over half the class doesn't speak
English.
Corn Flakes now come in a
bilingual box; I have to
'press one ' to hear my bank
talk to me in English, and
people waving flags other
than ”ours” are
squawking and screaming
in the streets, demanding
more rights and free liberties.
Just my opinion, but maybe
it's time for the government
to take down the bird feeder.
If you agree, pass it on; if not,
just continue cleaning up the shit!

bds1961 got a reaction from little_old_man in Any Bassheads?
The truck that I used way back then in competition was a 78 Toyota SR5 pick up . It had twin 10 inch subs built into the rear wall behind the seats 4 four inch midrange speakers built into the lower portion of the door. they covered a small portion of the bass
, dome tweeters in the upper section of the doors 5.5 coaxial speakers in the door pillars, I used a Nachamichi TD 1200 head unit that went to a electric crossover EQ that controlled 5 amps built into the truck one mounted way up in the dash behind the glove box two under the passenger seat another under the drivers seat and a purpose built sub amp mounted to the lower section next to the seat at the door jam. Small small interior in this truck. with test equipment it pushed 110 decibel's with no distortion through out the entire range. to make this all work I had to have a custom alternator made for the truck with a higher output and squeeze in a larger battery. Had a couple of large capacitor in line for the bass and mid amps. I used nothing but Focal speakers back then and to this day they make some of the best quality sounding speakers. All very high rated speakers for the 1 watt 1 meter specification. I sold Alphasonic amps back then and used all there amps in this one. there amps were way under rated on true power output but were so clean. fun stuff but I wonder at times why I have this continues ringing in my ears

I use to build custom sound systems in cars in the SF bay area. I built some of the first multi amped trucks seen in competition in the real early eighties. Then we went for true concert sound well balanced and clean. I quit building sound systems when I started seeing my clients readjusting the levels to do what they called then thumping. Waste of my time and great equipment.

bds1961 got a reaction from Leadfinger in Car Tires Recommendations
For good street tires that wont break the bank Michlen is making pretty good tires now with a good quite ride and a variety of ratings. I have used the Bridgestones and had great luck with them on my jeep that mostly lived on the road. a good performance tire is not going to give you high milage at all. Soft compounds wear fast. On my porsche years ago i only got about 8k per rear set and about 10k for the front but those where a true performance tire that was made for that particular rim and car by goodyear. poeple recomendations seem to run by brands they know, A lot of companies make great tires now. Depending on the weight of your car and how you really want to drive it side wall construction can be as important as the face of the tire. More sidewll plys make for a better turning car unless they are low profile. with that all said find a good furom on line for your make and modle of car and see what tires everyone else has had good luck with on a car that is the same as yours. Good Luck
