While your restarting your computer press F8 to start up in safe mode with network (You need to save files in case of wipe). If you installed something recently just before you had this problem, uninstall it. If the problem still happens then it could be microsoft installed something. Then you will be left with choice to wipe your pc. But before it comes to that everyone will try to suggest things that may help you.

System restore goes back to the last update you had before this error happened. Everything that is on your pc will not be deleted unless it was installed after the date you choose to go back to. I have never done a system restore so I do not know how to but I am pretty sure someone will give you instructions on how to.

COD 5 is the best if you want actual playing time. COD 4 is the most popular but once the server is full you get kicked/redirected to an empty server. I do not play cod 4 anymore.

It just sounds like your PC had a brain fart. Try clicking on the advanced options tab and see if there is a restore option there. Timmah! has a good idea to!!

I do use adblockplus and ghostery. I also have a firefox extension for yahoo mail called yahoo mail hide ad panel which eliminates all those annoying ads in yahoo mail. I do not use anti virus or anti malware programs anymore. I do not update windows. I back up daily. I have a clean ghost drive if I have to wipe for any reason. I am not really a web user like I used to be. I have about 10 sites I visit daily, 2 emails (yahoo & thunderbird) and I use about 5 programs daily (mainly for graphics design/blueprints).
