You currently pay THREE percent income tax and the rise would take it to FIVE? Do US workers have to pay any additional income tax to central government on top of that? The Basic Rate in the UK that everyone pays is 20%, rising to 40% for earnings over £37,400 and 50% on earnings over £150k. Workers also pay a national insurance tax on top at 11% so everyone says goodbye to 31% of what they earn before they get to spend any of it (and that doesn't include local council taxes that fund local services - variable according to area and size of the house you live in.) Our main indirect valued-added (sales) tax has just risen to 20%. I filled up with fuel tonight and paid the equivalent of US$ 7.76 per (US) gallon. The countries with the higher tax rates tend to supply more services than the ones with the lower ones. In the UK everybody expects the government to supply everything, like for example, health care. In the US most people have to supply these things for themselves (like through employment benefits), but the tax rates are lower so its a trade off Either way, taxes are too high in both places as the governments are the worst money managers in the world. So that helps a bit. $2.89 on the highs side per gallon. But I filled up this morning and found a station that was $2.79 per gallon. So my math is crap tonight. I know a liter is about .3 of one gallon. But not sure what the Pound exchange rate is right now or what a Liter of petrol in the UK cost right now. It seems the further north you go, the cheaper the fuel! 129.9p per litre here (unleaded petrol) (132.5 somewhere, I gather!) I'm glad they're looking at rolling back the tax as things are getting stupid. If the diesel price rises, so does the price of everything delivered by diesel truck! You're paying well under half what we pay per US gallon (US$7.76). We've begun considering disposing of the car completely. That isn't to say that public transport is a viable alternative - it is shit! However, when we analyse the long distance journeys that we take, we could continue to make them more economically by hiring a car. Insurance, vehicle excise licence (annual road tax) and maintenance costs (for annual government test - MoT) make vehicle ownership a luxury for the unemployed/retired.
