My kids' computer at their mothers house is very sick. It is about 3 1/2 years old, maybe older. I am thinking of replacing it with one that I throw together myself. With some assistance from a few XI members, we came up with the following:

HITACHI 500GB3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

COOLER MASTER HAF912 RC-912-KKN1 Black Computer Case

MSI GeForce GTX460 (Fermi) N460GTX Hawk Video Card

COOLER MASTERR4-S2S-124K-GP 120mm Case Fan 4 in 1 pack

XFX Core EditionPRO550W (P1-550S-XXB9) 550W Power Supply

SAMSUNG Black SATADVD-ROM Drive Model TS-H353C

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR31600

GIGABYTEGA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AMD Motherboard

AMD FX-6100 3.3GHzSocket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor

What do you peeps think of this system? Thanks

I'd personally go with a 650watts XFX, as the price is pretty close to the 550 watts...just to be on the safe side....

your hard drive is gonna be a major bottle neck. it only has a 16 mb buffer. tbh if you could wait a few weeks the prices should start coming back down on the hard drives before the floods for 99 you could get a wd 64mbs sata 6.0 gb/s black edition 1 tb.

here is a 2 tb wd green 64 mb/s drive for less than 40 more honestly this drive will perform alot better than that 16mb drive.

if 135 is too much for you  here is a wd green 32 mb/s 500gb drive for 109 that will be alot better than the 16mb your looking at

agreed

I think this sys recommends around 500 watts at 90% load

used the psu calculator

if you add anything a little later you might have to buy a new PSU LOL

Well Dark,

I'm saying your mostly right, this is a $$$ issue at the moment, all the good HDD's prices are thru the roof.. I remind the price of the WD Black 1TB 64mo to be around $79 a few months back!

Some HDD manufacturers will soon start to resume production, and hopefully this will cause the prices to drop back to when they were...

As for the WD GREEN....they're not bad drives, but they're mostly storage drives, because they're made to save on electricity, they park the "reading head" really often, it's like they go to sleep a lot more often than regular drives...that's why I'm not too fond on those to be used as Operating System drive...

im not the biggest fan of the greens used as op sys drives but compared to the 16mb drive hes looking at. the green will do a much better job at running his system

Scumz,

I seen that one from COMPUSA (I think you got one close to home AFAIK)

XFX 650 watts for $59.99 AFTER MAIL-IN rebate....

http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=125450&CatId=1483

This is a good one...manufactured by Seasonic and rebranded XFX...

But Compusa has some serious crap for sale also...gotta be careful sometimes...
