When I was in Thailand as a welder in the Army the locals would gather around if we were welding at night. Big ass flying bugs would fly into the arc or torch light and get the wings burnt, the locals would scoop them up and have a feast. Many time we just lit the torch with a carburizing flame (Very Bright!) to draw the insects in for them. Every once in a while before we learned to put a cloth over the back of the helmet one would fly in as you were welding. Very disconcerting to say the least. We learned fast to close all access. Damn insects were well over a inch long and hard and crusty.
