OK, well, that is interesting that you get a ping of 79 to that first hop...... I have DSL for one more day, here are my stats so far running a test after 20 min or so......

I'll post my ping txt from last night after gaming. When I ended it didn't look too bad but yeah I know what y'all mean about the concern... I'm thinking it's probably the 20+ year old wiring in the apartment complex and it's just having a shitfest right now. I've had the connection tested about 4-6 times in te last year and they said it looks good, but the wiring is old.... Who knows but I'll definitely try some of the advice all three of you have given.

Ah you live in a complex. I've seen some terrible messes with coax in apartment complexes. shit that made me wanna call my momma and cry.

LOL I made my cable guy run me a new aerial cable from the post to my house. He wanted to use the old one but I was like "nuh uh. says right here in the contract. You have to run a new cable."

also do you notice it only during peak hours? like 4-9 or so, because that could be just indicative of too many people on the ISP at once. That is one of the shitty things about cable.. If a lot of people in your area have it/use it they will slow down your connection even if you subscribe to a faster plan. kinda shitty. I wish they would do a decent fiber infrastructure down here.

Whats your degree in anyways, cats?

Haha yes I know. I used to run cat5 wires for my dad and his business but I work a lot now so I don't do it unless it's the weekend and he has a contract. The shit in the apt complex are just that lol. I've been saying for a long time that South Texas needs a good fiber optic line put in place. An yes I only get to play during peak times so it could be that as well.

My degree.... Well if I could if just burn the freaking paper that it's on it is pretty worthless (hint: has to do with bat shit crazy people)

I had some problems myself but found it was my ISP and jumped there ass and they fixed it still not 100%. I should be getting 60mbs but at half of that they will cut my bill down but will see, but I think BF4 severs have some kind of performance stabilizer for high ping players. my ping in all most all US severs is from 20-60 and in our EU sever im at 110-120 and don't see any difference but check you modem and router I just upgraded my router from Belkin to ASUS and did see a little difference, but the Belkin was 300mbs 2.4Ghz wireless and this ASUS is 900mbs and 5Ghz wireless so I see no drop in game when someone starts downloading something anymore.

The model for my modem is Arris cm820a and the router is Linksys E2500. This ping test was at the end of the night last night before I shut down.

You guys are missing the point.  Its not from his place out to the world (wiring in the place he lives) else you would see a great latency to his internal 10 network, and then high latency once it goes out from there.  It is the hop from his local computer (192.x.x.x.) to whatever the hell 10.x.x.x is.  Which is most likely his router or possibly the cable mode, (before it goes to the outside world).  Whatever is causing the high pings is LAN not WAN.

If you look at that last tracert you posted cats, you can see how the ping to your first hop (10.x.x.x) is now down to 13ms.  That is exactly where it should be.  That puts your final ping to our GSP at

62.  Exactly where it should be.   It is that first hop that is causing issues.  I really wish I knew who 10.x.x.x was...

10.x.x.x is not typically a default IP for routers. It could be his cable modem.

Cats, if you type 10.254.192.1 into your browser, do you get a page that pops up at all?

I'll have to check when I get home this evening. I was able to login into the modem page once but the bookmark I have for it is no longer valid. I saved it after the techs came out the last time lol. I'll see for sure and report back.

Ok.. I'll chime in here.  It may very well be the 10.x device, but his worst ping just to his router is 8 0 +. That is WAY to high.  Here is my advice in the order of importance...

1.  Try a new cable to your router.  Run Tests

2.  Try a new cable straight to your modem. Run Tests**

3.  Make sure coax is tightly secured in all locations. Run Tests

4. Try plugging into another cable outlet in your house . Run Tests.

**If you don't have a new cable, just use the one from your modem to the router for testing to plug from modem to PC.

Again, an 8 0 + ping to your router at anytime is not normal. Cables don't normally go bad, unless the tips get worn, or strained, especially home-made cables...Except mine of course ;)  I'm about 85% sure its your router.

I partially agree.

However, I tend to ignore highs and lows when it comes to anything log related, especially if his average latency is 0, in my eyes the router is fine.  But I just dont get how both his router is local and the 10.x is local.  Who the fuck is 10.x!  My guess is that 10.x is still the Cable Modem and its just subnetted so that it goes from LAN to WAN as all Cable Modems do.  Very well could be they dont allow you to log in to the cable modem without defining the port.

A quick google search shows that many many cable modem vendors us 10.x for their local network.  So that is where Im putting my money.  Something awry with the connection from the router, to the cable modem.  Now the question is, who is causing the issue.

Cats did you get a chance to unplug your router and connect directly to the cable modem yet?  And the run that program?  That is going to be the best bet at this point.

I wasn't on for long yesterday. I'll have to do it today. I haven't been lagging/high ping the last day or so and when I've played I've been around 50-65 ms. I'm going to try today. Edited by acucats07

Here is a plan, replace everything.

Then enjoy the faster speeds and play with us.

I didn't see but I'll make the assumption that you're wired(cat5e/cat6) to your router but do you have wireless enabled? Any other network devices attached to your router?

Perhaps a friendly neighbor is liberating some of your bandwidth.

I have it password protected.

I played some this weekend and didn't have very many issues and no kicks. I am going to run the program and see.

I also downloaded some steam games this weekend and had no issue with download speed. I'm thinking maybe it was just a hiccup.

Someone from who works for you ISP probably joined the server and got killed by you too many times, so they haxed your cable modem to piss you off temporarily.

That's the only logical explanation.

Hey guys, I was having a lot of the same issues and I'm still seeing some packet loss from time to time. When I was working with NFO directly and ran a tracert, it was showing the same that it wasn't a server issue. I then started working with Time Warner directly and unfortunately I ran into a very similar issue that I had 10-12 hops to Chicago and two in the middle were where my lag was but it was not a server issue.

Time Warner did some stuff internally I guess to make some changes and it did improve a bit. I also did purchase a new modem and router which has eased problems as well. The Time Warner modem I was using was a pile of shit.

Not sure if this helps a lot but hopefully you get this issue figured out as I know how much of a pain in the ass it is. I'm literally a 6 Hour drive from Chicago and have a higher ping to the server than some of the guys who live in California.

Did we ever get a picture or model number of the modem you have? I would like to know what kind of cable modem it is.... Might help to replace it with one of the new DOCSIS 3.0 modems I mentioned before

Just a thought. Hope it has been better!
