This is one for you whizz kids out there...

We recently changed I.S.P. from sky to orange ok...???

On sky my gaming ping was around 120/130. On freeze tag and zombie servers.

Now on Orange it is 200 +. on freeze tag and zombie servers.

Max speed down our phone lines over here is 6 KBPS. This is landline from B.T. MAX 6KBPS. ACCORDING TO SPEED TESTER IT SAYS 6.13 KBPS.

This is what we were getting from sky as well and now its the same speed from orange so why is my ping higher ???

Anyone got a clue as Orange cant tell me and sky WONT tell me.. HHHHHEEELLPPPPP

6kbps is your bandwidth, that does not necessarily equate to speed. Think of it as a pipe carrying water, if the one pipe is 6" wide and another is 12" wide, then obviously the 12" pipe will carry a lot more water than the 6" pipe but the water won't flow through it any faster especially if your game isn't using the whole 6" (which it won't). Now ping is a whole different beast, it is the time taken for your water to leave your pc and reach the server. This can be impacted by many things but two to look at are the type of error correction your ISP uses, interweaving can add about 32 to your ping before you go anywhere, the other is how they route your water, if the route used by your new isp is much longer than the previous one, this will impact your ping too. run a traceroute to see if the route they are using makes sense. Obviously if they are routing you to America via Africa or the east coast of america via the west coast etc - that wouldn't makes sense

Another thing

Go to www.speedtest.net and do a complete ping test, or go direct to www.pingtest.net

This will allow you to do a more thorough test of your connection, not just ping

It will do a complete line test, which has the following components

Ping - described above

Packet Loss - anything less than 0% (or is that greater) is bad

Jitter - This is the VARIANCE in your ping. While ping is a "one-time" shot, jitter is over a time period. A 70ms connection that has 10ms jitter is a lot better than a 30ms connection with 50ms jitter

That wasnt meant as an insult Gramps .. I Appreciate the help but even that post was beyond me. if Had half the pc knowhow of somepeople id do better. ok here goes.

I tried the ping test

I tried the speed test and that came up as 6.13 mbps.

I rang Orange and i might as well talk to the wall. They just dont want to have anything to do with the gameing ping they say the ping is normal..

They say the line is ok an so do B.T. They say there is no probs with clarity an so on.

they spent 20 mins makin me hold on the line when they went to do some sort of check.. So I still dont have a clue it just seems strange that sky ping was 120/130 an now the Orange ping is higher 200+.

It pisses me off that even tho i spend time tryin to understand this blasted pc it totaly dumbfounds me.. Maybe I need a new one ?

As I said Gramps there was no malice or insult intended you talkin to a complete dork when it comes to pc`s lol

you might also wanna try to do a tracert on command prompt to the ip of one of the servers and see how many hops it takes to get to the server.

There is also a product call Killer Network. Interface card....This can help greatly inprove your ping sometimes....I have one and tried it. It helped mine a little, but my ping now is 16 sometimes and almost always the lowest ping in Crysis Wars here. Around 32.

Overclocking your pc is a risky business to say the least. What it involves is "cheating" one of the major components in your machine to run faster than it is supposedly designed to run at. For example, if you have a 2.8Ghz processor, you can force it to run at, say, 3Ghz. The same with the Motherboard, RAM, graphics card etc. Anything that has a set running speed can, THEORETICALLY be speeded up, or overclocked.

The good news is better speed, which is always good.

Now the bad news, there is inherent risk involved with this. The max speed of components is set for a reason. Overclocking a component will, most likely, result in the item running hotter and even a small amount of speeding up can be enough to "let the magic smoke out" of a MB or processor, which is why I don't recommend it normally and I wont post how to do it. My pc is overclocked because I am too cheap to buy a new one and I am running on a clapped out piece of junk, but I have paid the price for this in other ways (read new MB, new graphics card)

I dont know if you thought I meant to overclock your system. I did not! I was just showing a gadget I have bought and installed in several of my systems. I DO NOT OVERCLOCK. I have no need to, my system is fast enough as it is. Capt.Tiger please post what you have for a system. I might have some free parts for you to speed it up a bit. Or really cheap depending on what you have now.

your problem can be easily found in u chaning ISP's alone... u dont need to run traceroute.. u dont need to do speed test...... the problem is.... the way your routed to the server.... EXAMPLE.... ISP (A) runs in a straight line.... While ISP (B) goes around the block..... then in a straight line..... hence the difference in ur ping.... been doing professional gaming for 10 + years.... and been a computer tech/ networking tech this whole time....... something you might want to try.... is to dump your network card.... ALSO....
