Making hard cider at the moment first attempt .Anyone home brewing??

1 gallon no preservatives apple juice

2 cup's sugar

little cinnamon/couple shakes

1 yeast packet

1 balloon/tape

take out about 3 cups juice and put to side.

put rest in pot and add sugar to warm it and dissolve sugar*do not boil

let sit and cool.

add back into storage vessel/bottle it came in.

add yeast and shake vigorously.

stretch out base of balloon so fits over end of bottle.

put pinhole in very end of balloon.

attach balloon to end of bottle and tape around base to hold in place.

let site in 65-70 f degrees for 2-4 wks till balloon stops inflating.

after fermentation your ready to re bottle and separate the residue from the yeast from the rest of the liquid.is there an easy way to do this?

Hey Damage, I brew my own beer. Don't forget tto get some sort of food grade sterilizer for the bottles and equipment. If you don't it will turn sour and not have a good shelf life. It will turn into prison hooch.

Oh yeah, go get your self some chees cloth to filter out the yeast and other stuff.

You could use them, but make sure the are not the regulare ones. Get the ones that have high flow filtration properties. Otherwise you will be there all day trying to get the stuff bottled.

Something like this inside a funnel...

I homebrew with a friend as well. we make cider. but from fresh apples. any juice we tried had sorbate in it to not allow fermentation to take place. Organic or not and nothing on the label about it being there. they jhave to add it by law or something. We found an apple orchard that had an old press and made cider. that with a yeast package or just by itsself would ferment like crazy. as for filitration. the first rack (siphone) will leave a lot of yeast and whatnot on the bottom. Dont take all the cider there swill be waste. everything settles to the bottome and you will waste less and less each time. let it sit it will clarify and condiditon. We use carboy's though. If in a bucket. i guess cheese cloth would catch it if you used enough. Gorilla is right about sanitation. How much do you brew? We did 15 gal batches for along time and have just upgraded to 1 barrel 31 gallon batches. Ill post pics as soon as I get the plumbing done. Got to run hot water.

Good luck and keep it up. everyone should be brewing. Its more fun than shooting puppies. (that is a joke) Puppies are way more fun. lol but for real. it is alot of fun and should be done by all. :2guns:

Good to see others brewing!

I have been brewing since 1994 & made around 90 Batches.

I can make 10 Gallons per batch, both Ale & Lager.

Sanitation Is The Most Important Thing!!!!!

Pick up the Book "How to Brew" for good info.

Or try the webpage to read online

Sparty, do you use a plastic fermenter? How do you get things clean w/o scratches? I've never tried cider, sounds like fun. We have all kinds of apple trees, blackberry & raspberry bushes & apricots. Might be fun making a berry beverage out of this stuff.

Still, with Two Brothers right up the road and Rudys liquor carrying all manner of craft brew, it's nice to fork out a ten and sample others work.

You can use a no rinse sanitizing solution. This way you don't have to scrub the items or wash them with water from the faucet. Ley them soak for about 5-10 minutes and just drain. A good tip is to put what ever brewing items you will be using to make the batch and also soak them in the fermentation device.

I look forward to hearing how it tastes after it's had a chance to mellow and be chilled.

I only use Glass fermenters. I use Powdered Brewery Wash (PBW) to remove Beer-stone & Star Sanitizer (No Rinse Like Gorilla Mentioned) to sterilize.

Plastic will hold Bacteria even if sanitizing solution spends a week inside the plastic container if container has any cleaning scratches.

It lives inside the scratches. You can get away with plastic for a few batches, but your brews will develope a 'House" Off flavor eventually.

Remember, Malt Sugar or Fruit sugar is Bacterias favorite Food!

PROSIT!!!!
