I'm not super happy with the way it turned out. The stummel looks great and the stem looks great, but I don't think they work well together. I think I may end up re-shaping the stem to slim it down and make the curves match the stummel better. The stem was a bit of an experiment with the inlaying. I failed a few times but got it in the end. (thanks @@little_old_man for the help) I learned a lot about how to do it better next time. Polishing the aluminum produces a black soot that stained the cedar wood. I want to redo the polishing job to get rid of the stain. The briar block was also very strange. I've never seen such a random grain pattern. Most expensive pipes have a cleaner grain with lots of spirals and dots. I suspect my ebauchon came from the edge of the root. If I acquire a buffing wheel in the near future I'm going to re-polish the whole thing to get a better glaze. Cost: - 50 +/- hours - $40 (materials, tools, sandpaper) Build Materials: - Stem: White cedar ( my yard ) - Inlay: Aluminum ( lowes ) - Stummel: Briar ( ebay ) - Tenon: Nylon ( lowes ) Size: - Bowl: 3/4" x 1 1/2" - Length: 9 1/2" - Draught Hole and Bore: 1/8" - Mortise: 1/4" How it started: (I drilled the holes already in this pic) Scoarch, KingStinger!, Leadfinger and 2 others 5

The stem style look is more Native American than your traditional European style pipe, but I like that because I'm into Native American artifacts. I think the grain on the bowl is outstanding. Uniform grain is boring. Give me a nice burl with no pattern to it what-so-ever and I like it. Aluminum will always turn things black when you buff it. Ever thought of using mother of pearl or something along those lines? I have a back yard full of abalone shells that could easily be cut and shaped into inlay material. eidolonFIRE 1 Awards

Then attach a bow string to the end of the shaft and spin it back and forth. They were quite good at drilling holes through just about anything from little shells for beads to very large rocks. eidolonFIRE and HarryWeezer 2 Awards

Pipes are usually a dime a dozen on eBay unless they're vintage and/or rare. There are currently more than 35,000 of them for sale there. The highest priced pipe I could find on eBay that actually sold was a sixten ivarsson egg pipe with a bamboo a shaft that brought $5,555.55. Not sure why, but I guess somebody saw something appealing about it. eidolonFIRE 1 Awards

The aluminum inlay looks good, the rustic wood look with a bit of modern aluminum for bling . . .lol . and I'm with LOM on the burl bowl . .there is nothing wrong with that piece and you shaped it nicely. With the right tools you could set up and make say 5 pipes and knock that down to 10 hrs. I know you would like each one to be different so perhaps just changing the type of inlay material but the rest would be the same so once you get set up you could easily bust out some bowls and stems. You just need some tools to get you going With Marijuana becoming legal in so many states now you might want to consider designing some of your pipes for that growing market . .pot smokers appreciate a good drawing pipe too and their money is just as good. . LOM those native Indian pipes are very cool indeed, I am particularly fond of the twisted one . . that took some native a lot of coffee to make that one. . . lol little_old_man and eidolonFIRE 2 Awards
