We had an insane 4-hour thunderfest today as a hot and humid air mass collided with a cold front from the north. The first 5 shots are from this evening, and the last two from Sept 1. The first 3 lightning shots were in heavy rain, but the focus maybe could have been tighter. I am happy with the 3rd one.

@@Astronomer How did you manage to click at just the right time , did you use a light activated shutter? Those lightning pics are sweet.

The only way I could get some good lightning pics is to shoot video and go back and copy still photos from the video.

They aren't too focused but the sequencing almost makes up for it.

Lightning is a unwilling subject to photograph . .

Great sequence of shots there Leadfinger, and thanks! I have a Canon 70D DSLR camera. A buddy of mine makes these light-activated shutter triggers: http://www.togastro.com/toga_ld.html. It triggers the shutter. The art is configuring the camera to the proper ISO, F-stop, and shutter settings, as well as getting a good focus on infinity. Through trial and error I'm slowly getting better.

The other option is to use the "Bulb" setting  on your camera and leave the shutter open and have it take continuous shots in 30-second increments. A buddy of mine got some awesome shots that way tonight.

When I was ( date ing myself a little) a wild land firefighter we had these three lookout towers, in two of them were some older gals we would fall asleep listening to them talk about that "Driller" every time " 626 did you see that Driller make note of that one I'm sure she'll smoke in the morning" lol

found an app for my phone that helps take shots of lightning and other surprise type shots.  you point the camera/phone at something and when it happens you got  1-3 secs to hit the button, depending on the resolution you set it at, then it pops up a series of photos it was taking before you click.. its called Lightning Camera.
