right, i just got a brand new laptop running windows 7 home premium, for the last three days i've been trying to install critical upadates, windows live etc but they all fail.  The only clue i've been able to get is that when windows live installer starts trying to install, it pops up saying that another installer is running or a program is preventing the new installation.

I'm at a complete loss here - any thoughts?

thx

There might be a proprietary updater for your laptop.  I once had a Toshiba that had one.

You could also try doing one update at a time to see which one may be causing the problem.

Take a look at your firewall settings, try turning them off just to see if the firewall is preventing the downloading.

check this also:-   http://www.intowindows.com/fix-failed-update-installations-in-windows-7-vista-with-official-system-update-readiness-tool

At the bottom of the page it takes you to microsoft and you can choose the 64 bit or the 32 bit version depending on what yours is.

It may help.
