I'm sure most everyone has heard that quote a couple thousand times or two. As much as we make fun of the old time ways of living and doing things. As I grow more and more senior than junior I can actually appreciate that quote particularly in the gaming industry. For the last 5-10 yrs most gaming producers concentrate on the visual effect and leave the actual gaming experience to be greatly lacking. I speak from the idea of how you as a player can play with your friends and not have the unrestrained influx of trouble making people. You know some of those old games like COD4 and COD5(WaW). You see the lure of a great game draws us to spend hard earned money to buy the updated versions of the games we have grown to love. Today I rarely even buy a game anymore that I have had bad experiences with online! The question is what makes the COD 4 & 5 games so attractive to most of us after all these years?

To start with there are many genres of games just as there are styles and genres of music and movies. Ever since I can remember since World of Warcraft came out I can remembering the resistance to play it. But it is not even close to being the same class or genre as the COD series. I don't have at my fingertips all the correct terminology as to the genres they all fall under but I can tell you I now play World of Warcraft much more that the COD games.  I suppose most of it is I am getting much better at that game and I can play it all night when I can't sleep, all by myself. The biggest reason for resisting playing it back in the day was the monthly fee to play it. I later learned that that monthly charge is basically for the upgrade and management of the seemingly endless amount of servers they have world wide. Not much different than they way we do here at XI.

I mention this because a few years ago the makers of COD decided they wanted some of that money themselves but with a different twist. You must buy the map packs and today etc. Up till this I bought the games faithfully and was sucker punched like every other Idiot out there. One of the coolest things about these 2 old games is the fact you can mod them to play the way you want to play on your server. I believe that the game companies were very short sighted when they decided to go in this direction. I also think if they had left the madding in the newer games most of us would have almost all of them and play them on our servers. I have what seems to be a return back to those old games instead of buying the newest and fanciest flops and be completely disenchanted as a consumer! It's been several yrs I haven't bought any new games other than WoW. Oh yeah they are far from perfect but at least I don't have to worry about  not knowing anyone I play with on our servers.

I talk about WoW because I am familiar with it and I play it. Many of you all may have other reasons for playing or not playing certain games I may think are fine, and that is okay with me. I want to give a HUGE shout out to the people who help manage and run our servers without any more problems than is possible.  Thank you all and I can't even name you anymore but you make all this fun possible!

Yo - BPD - how about the cliff notes version   - I'm not use to reading anything that long that doesn't have nude females pictures as part of it.

People seem to forget that, at the time, cod4 on the PC had its fair share of obnoxious players. But it was easier to deal with them with admin privileges. Map packs also cost money now... more than for sheer profit... because these days they are much more complex to produce if you want them to look good. All the various internal tools needed are much more complicated. Some of them are proprietary belonging to other companies that want money. So it makes no business sense to give them away for free.

So while the packs may be overpriced, or maybe not, they are no longer going to be free.  That can be a good thing tho. Now that they cost money we can expect and demand more out of them. If the maps suck we dont just say 'hey its free'. We complain, loudly. The in-game transaction idea with real world money, with the money going to the developer, is total profit however. So far they are only cosmetic in this franchise. You cant buy anything that actually increases your power.  As it is now I dont see a change in that, with money for improved weapons, without backlash and affecting the player base.

Personally, Im bored with military FPS's. I think the FPS as we know it is a dying genre. Not without a major change that focuses on an actual global community in the style of WoW. Or an RPG.  A single world filled with NPC's and dedicated squads (8 players max) not random teams. Attack and kill NPC's to get XP and items. Or... focus instead on going after other squads, killing them all, and stealing their items. Then sell them in-game for new equipment. As used items of course. Then again, if you lose, they steal yours. It promotes full squads among friends to avoid 8 on 1 battles. Unless, if you work alone, you are very very careful.

Certainly that is monthly fees. But if the game is big enough, and addictive enough, it could be more than enough to run all the infrastructure and make a tidy profit. Especially since such a game could last years. Not months. Oh and provide ways that players can do something to get the monthly fee waived. This is not for the casual 'hop on hop off' player.

Anyways. Long term it is no longer about tweaking gameplay. "Fixing" things. Offering a 'pro' option, which is another way of saying basic. Better graphics or sound. New weapons, gadgets or other goodies. New abilities. Not even simply new maps or new gametypes that run on them. What can MW4 do thats actually new and different? BF is trying WWI. Weeee. Same game just 'back to basics' in the same setup. More or less. I hate made up phrases like paradigm shift. Developers say their latest game is 'revolutionary'. But what is needed is a revolution.

There, my highly opinionated post of the day and I didnt even mention anyone with a name that has a capital 'T' in it.

edit. Cross cod with planetside 2 with some more npc/rpg/squad elements and, since it has the franchise name, there is money to be made.
