Nobody knows exactly how much gold the US, China or any other government actually holds. Additionally, there is a verification problem. Counterfeit gold is widespread. Would you take gold from someone you didn't know in trade for goods and services? Bitcoin fixes both of these problems. In the short term gold will definitely be better than holding US Treasury Bonds..but in the long run, Bitcoin will demonetize gold.
