  1. Now THAT was awesome!!!
  2. I think Cedega is a fork of the WINE emulation project. Not native Linux, but strong windows emulation. Native is preferable, but if this works well...
  3. COD will run like poop in a virtual environment as the operating system and therefore the game will not have direct access to the video hardware. You'll be running the generic virtual video driver, which is not optimized for the card like a native driver is. There are a number of good open source games out there: http://www.penguspy.com/ but they should be run on a "bare-iron" Linux installation. Steam is in beta and this could be a game-changer for making Linux a game platform. Getting the video card manufacturers to put real resources into quality drivers is always an issue. nVidia drivers have always been better than AMD.
  4. This, from the insane bureaucracy of the European Union, where everything from the size and shape of a turnip is regulated: "An update to an energy law, which will apply in the European Union, has the power to limit sale of discrete components deemed 'energy inefficient.' GPU maker AMD is worried this will affect future technology as it becomes available, as well as some current offerings. From TFA: 'According to data NordicHardware has seen from a high level employee at AMD, current graphics cards are unable to meet with these requirements. This includes "GPUs like Cape Verde and Tahiti", that is used in the HD 7700 and HD 7900 series, and can't meet with the new guidelines, the same goes for the older "Caicos" that is used in the HD 6500/6600 and HD 7500/7600 series. Also "Oland" is mentioned, which is a future performance circuit from AMD, that according to rumors will be used in the future HD 8800 series. What worries AMD the most is how this will affect future graphics cards since the changes in Lot 3 will go into effect soon. The changes will of course affect Nvidia as much as it will AMD.' Is this the beginning of the end for high-end GPU sales in the EU?" The report in question. Each performance category of hardware has a power draw ceiling; in this case, regulators are increasing the minimum bus bandwidth for the highest performance category, bumping all hardware on the market into the next lowest. Unfortunately, no current hardware or planned hardware on the high end will come under the power draw ceiling for that category.
  5. Astronomer has the sads... :-)
  6. Very nice! I love building and tinkering with PC's, and reading about other people's rigs. What brand motherboard? How much memory? What water cooler system are you using?
  7. Good to see you here Crazygirl! I don't (can't, actually) drink beer, so no insincere marriage proposals from me, though I do appreciate the occasional defrost when we're on the same team!
  8. Thanks for pointing this out. It installed just fine and my plugins and favorites carried over nicely.
  9. Congrats Terry! Life is about balance, and family and things that maintain the family come first, always.
  10. Does Comcast have an account page that you can log into? Bell in Canada has a menu option that lets me see my monthly usage and I can drill down further to see what my daily uploads and downloads were. I would assume most providers would offer something like this.
  11. Wonder if he ever had to do that in real life?
  12. Thanks for putting in the time on behalf of all the Idiots out there. We do appreciate it! Enjoy the haggis and single-malt scotch. Slàinte mhòr agad! (Gaelic, "Good health to you")
  13. Congrats to both of you! I'll have to dig through my photo collection and find the most embarrassing shots of Belted...I think I have a few...

  16. Words fail me here buddy. It's been a heck of a year for you and yours. You, your daughter, and your family are in our thoughts tonight.
  17. Welcome back Sir! Yup, the FT server is still going strong.
  18. I spent last evening showing the moon through one of my telescope to a buddy and his three young children. I made a point of showing them the area where Mr. Armstrong left his famous footprints, and where real history was made. RIP Neil.
  19. Well, there were several thousand folks - NASA employees, government employees, military, and contractors - involved. 3 people cannot keep a secret. Several thousand? Fuggedaboutit. One of the more important things that the folks who went to the moon did was to set up a mirror on the surface. Scientists on earth can point a laser to it, and measure the time it takes for the reflection to bounce back. That way we can know the precise distance to the moon, amongst other things. I've seen this in action and it's quite cool. There is no question that we have been to the moon. Other info: http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/apollohoax.html And Neil Armstrong is a true pioneer, like Columbus, Cabot, Vespucci and so many others. A friend of mine and his daughter got to meet him personally recently. His daughter is the youngest person to discover a supernova. Because of this they were invited to an astronomy conference on the Canary Islands, and Mr. Armstrong was there in a rare public appearance. It's frustrating that we haven't been back to the moon in over 40 years. The last surviving lunar astronauts are aged 77-82.
  20. Even more enjoyable, go do something reproductive!
  21. ...I present this musical interlude for your enjoyment.
