Never encountered such a problem, but it sounds like you might have assigned another key to switch the guns. Perhaps the Shift key, as an example, is set to switch to pistol, and you are not aware of it?

Upon reading the subject of your post, I initially thought you were suggesting an alternative to "COD4 freezetag" I'm not the one you are referring to, but apparently, I was also unaware of an easy solution to the problem. Thank you for taking the time to provide a better solution!
