  1. CPU fan speed is controlled by the temperature sensors and the chipset on the motherboard. Although there may be some applications that have override control, this is not necessary, and could lead to problems if set too low. Some fan headers on the motherboard are not variable, but are rather used for fixed speed cabinet fans, or fans that may have their own speed control. Check your motherboard's docs to find out how the headers are labeled. The CPU fan header is usually pretty close to the CPU socket, but that's not the best indicator; the header label is the best indication.
  2. Happy Birthday, Angel. Get you some!
  3. WOW! And still free?
  4. This is so awesome! I'm sick of people dissing Miley. She's too young to be in control of decisions like she's making, and I believe, as Sinead clearly does, she's being led. Miley makes great music. In the beginning it was sometimes rough and unpolished, yet showed great promise. Now that promise is coming to flower and others are taking advantage. This letter is a health dose of reality, and states - for the world - the truth that is less than obvious to those not in it for their own personal gain. I hope Miley embraces these words, but more than that, I hope people everywhere embrace what Sinead has said. Brilliant! This letter also, just so you know, validates every hope and dream I've ever had for my internet radio station - Girls Rock Radio - to become more than just a "radio station" but rather to become a platform for exploring how better to honor and respect women. http://www.ourstage.com/blog/2013/10/3/sinead-oconnors-remarkable-open-letter-to-miley-cyrus
  5. Used to think I could never live without a watch - until I got a cellphone. Would probably feel like a watch was a ball and chain strapped to my wrist if I ever put one on again.

    BSOD

thanks dj I found that setting. I always like to find out what the code means and then fix it. fortunately this was the first time this system ever crashed and its almost 3 years old Be aware that a fluke BSOD is possible. A gamma ray just happens to pierce the heart of your processor at just the wrong moment and flips just the wrong bit... or whatever. Only become nervous when it seems like a chronic issue. A second time in as many days would have me worried, but not once in a blue moon. Did the system logs tell you anything? They should have.

    BSOD

You do not need a 3rd party viewer to see what went wrong. Simply open the Windows Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc) and click into the "Windows Logs" area and start scanning for errors at the date and time of the BSOD. They will be obvious. The reason you are not able to read the BSOD because the system reboots too fast is because you have Automatic Restart on System Failure enabled, which it is by default. To turn it off so you can actually get a look at the BSOD screen: Go into the Control Panel and start the System app (or right click on Computer in the Start menu and select Properties.) Select Advanced System Settings from the selections on the left sidebar (this places you in the System Properties dialog on the Advanced tab.) Under the Startup and Recovery section, click the Settings button. Uncheck Automatically Restart. If you do this, you will need to force a restart yourself whenever you get a BSOD.
  8. Fuck me! No thank you!
  9. Sorry, I just couldn't do that math. Got lost between the real and imaginary numbers.
  10. OMG That's funny as hell !!!
  11. An amazing achievement!
  12. Ah the irony.
  13. Great. Now I'll fuck up (as usual) and start calling you "Chewie" - as has become popular now - catch myself, have a huge vowel-movement, and end up calling you "Cheweener." See what you've gone and done. Idiot!
  14. Since the COD5 servers across the world are down, perhaps a little behind the scenes video will take the edge off...
  15. Unmistakable laugh. Enjoy shooting at you, so let's see if you can put up with that shit another six.
  16. Canadians have all the fun!

    antivirus

I had a whole post written up for @@ChknFngr but deleted before posting. Some battles you just have to decide whether to go into or just lob the MOAB into the middle of it and be done. I thought I already did that with my previous post, but whatever. Labob once again did a great job of stating the position I was going to anyway, so it all got said just the same. Good on 'ya, Labob. But... You know the real threat to any computer? The person sitting behind the keyboard, that's who! Yes, there are some attacks that come from directions that are out of the realm of the user's control, but the VAST majority of infections come at the hands of someone who let their guard down. Let their vigilance slip. Believed a hoax was real. Clicked before thinking (and then immediately thought, "FUCK!!!") You name it, but the person behind the keyboard is almost always ultimately at fault and could have avoided the attack. Just be careful what you do. Don't live your on-line life in fear, suit up your computer in reasonable armor, and then get out there and have fun. That's just my $0.02; take it or leave it in the take a penny, leave a penny dish at the checkout.
  18. 3:31 of my life I'll never get back. WTF?
  19. Total piece of functional art right there. But at the end of the day, all that's required is moving heat. Seems like a lot of superfluous money invested in doing something that less pretty equipment could do equally well for a fraction of the cost. Just sayin', and it's my flat busted broke ass mentality talking too boot, so feel free to ignore me.

Labob is correct. And let's be serious - who better to know the threat vectors better than Microsoft. That is, who better to protect Windows than Microsoft themselves. Do not run multiple AV programs together - that's redundant, wasteful of computer resources, and may conflict in unexpected ways. That's conventional wisdom from way back, and it frankly just makes sense. Do not download MS Security Essentials from Major Geeks or anywhere other than from Microsoft here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download If you're on Win8 - forgetaboutit. It's already installed and should be running. No additional AV required. Check the security app in the Control Panel if you need to verify that. Where is the XP version of MSSE? Doesn't exist. Who cares? XP is dead. Not supported. Move on. Or use Avast or some other 3rd party freeware.
  21. With trash like that, who needs a trailer?
  22. It's great for getting the paper! Because BigPapaDean needed yet another phone number to call.
  23. Titty Bear is a WAY more appropriate name, if you ask me. See if you don't think so too within the first few seconds.
  24. Watch out! I just got a "weekly status update" from Facebook that wasn't from Facebook. Get it? Fraudulent look-alike emails are big these days. Check the links BEFORE you click or else you'll be like
