I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers as well as your medical team.  If you need anything, questions...etc. please don't hesitate.  I think I had shared with you that Leukemia/Cancer is one of the areas I specialize and am chemo certified as well.  It takes great collaboration to overcome the complications of a transplant.  My best advice is this:  Take a notebook with you to the hospital.  Write down any questions, doctors that visit with names as well as their recommendations and plan for you.  Even when you don't feel like it, still do it.  By you being treated at a University Hospital, I can only assume that this institution is a teaching hospital which is great but you will encounter many professionals and you need to keep straight who says what.  Sometimes you get mixed signals which is unintentional but helps if you know who told you what.  I also encourage you to journal day to day your progression, thoughts and feelings.  Be sure to include the tinniest improvement as this battle will not be won overnight and time can be a very frustrating thing.  Do not rush home.  If they tell you that you need to stay, then stay.  Trust me when I tell you that hospitals/insurance won't let you be there any longer than is necessary.  Educate your famiy as to what to expect.  Take a laptop, ipad etc.   Take anything that you enjoy doing to help pass the time.  Make an online account to your cable company as most channels have downloadable movies and shows esp if you subscribe to like HBO etc.  After your transplant be sure to wear a mask when you leave your room.  Walk the halls multiple times a day to help keep your strength up.  Being in bed will suck that right out of you quickly otherwise. If you don't like the food, have someone bring things in for you.  I know our unit have a special food prep area with patient fridge and cabinetry for this very thing.  I wish you well on your journey.

It's looking like we're going ahead
with my transplant, somewhere around the end of September or beginning of
October. This is dam nearly 1 year after being diagnosed with Leukemia.... I'm
doing exceptionally well my surgeon told us yesterday that he feels very
    confident in my recovery..........

So I will be admitted to OHSU for a minimum of 30 days for
the procedure, then after all is well I will be released to home and will need
24/7 care for the next 100 days just to monitor my health and watch for complications….
And yes “wild” that means I’ll need a babysitter… lol…. I am both excited and
scared at the same time, but all has to be okay, as I still owe a few of you
some knifing and you know who you are…

Looks like we've a lot of folks who have/ have had back problems. I'm looking for advice.

I posted that I was having MRIs on all three spinal sections. The result: two herniated cervical discs, a thorassic fracture, and a herniated lumbar disc. However, none of these issues is putting any pressure on the spinal cord and the surgeon told me this morning that because of that, surgery is not warranted and would do me no good. He suggests a pain management regimon.

My lower back doesn't bother me much unless I do heavy physical labor. I pay for that for 4-5 days and that it's back to normal. My upper back bothers me most every night, and on occasion the pain is very severe, very sharp and across my upper back. This is largely because I sit at a computer all day, and most evenings.

So, what to do about it. I have a sister addicted to pain meds for this very reason. She now wears a morphine patch. And so, I am not going to take paid meds - short or long-term.

Otherwise, he suggests cortisone shots. I hear from different people that they do a lot of good initially, but you have to keep coming back - which I can do, but I'm not interested in doing it every other month.

    Questions:

    - If you have similar back problems and have had the shots, how long do they last before you need another treatment?

    - How long have you been taking the shots; did there come a time that you didn't need them anymore?

    - Doc. said that as we age, our back "stiffens" and at some point, he expects this pain to go away. Any of you old farts go through this, and then have the pain just disappear?

    - Any other pain mangement advice other than the shots?

    Thanks for listening...

    Harry
