I wouldn't take what anyone says on these forums as pure fact not news websites, hell, not even my own posts. Look for yourself on the Microsoft website for the true story. The offer is good for one year, once done you have it for as long as they support it. Anti-viruses will be one of the programs that require updating to work as they use OS functionality for scanning, they will of course have to update whereas most programs will run fine. Do you actually use media player? I have always used VLC for DVDs - I wouldn't call that 'special' software.

They don't do it purposefully and that is the case for all operating systems, I apply similar updates to the Linux systems I run as well as to the Windows systems.
There was rumour that they would allow free upgrades to those using bootleg versions but as it is not mentioned anywhere on their website I would say those rumours have been falsified.
