Well folks I've finally had it with my junk-ass rig and I'm dipping into the savings to rebuild (keeping my decent parts, just need a CPU, MoBo and RAM) Looking for any input people care to offer, specifically the memory compatibility with the Core i7's, i.e. it seems to me the 9xx series supports only up to 1066 MHz effective clock, while the Sandy Bridge line supports up to 1333 MHz? Is that just for the integrated mem controller or what? Explain please :)

Also if anyone has run across any sweet deals on US retail sites I'd be much obliged. Laughing ty all

T-mouse, I just got:

Corsair Force 60GB SSD

ASUS P8P67 Pro DDR3 Mobo

Intel Core i5 2500k quad core

Ripjaws X F3 8GB DDR3 RAM

all for around $700.

The difference between the i5 and i7 I don't think warrants the extra cost, unless you have the money to throw around. I'd take the i5 and use the money for something else. Whether you get a 2500 or 2500 series, make sure you get the "K" model. It's the only model that allows overclocking.

Since the i5 uses dual channel memory, you only have to buy two modules. The i7 is triple channel which means you have to buy memory in groups of 3. Again, more money.

Right now my rig is running steady at 4.3 Ghz.

There is three different i7s...

The i7 8** series, using dual-channel RAM (socket 1156 on the P55 platform)

The i7 9** series, using triple-channel... (socket 1366 on the X58 platform)

The new sandy bridge CPUs (i5 and i7, socket 1155 on the P67 platform)) are both using dual channel...

Officially, the Sandy bridge CPUs are supporting the 1333mhz RAM variety...you can buy faster RAM, but it's not officially supported..it will work tho... i highly recommend that you buy 1.5Volts RAM....because of the memory controller now being on the CPU...

Now, the RAM doesn't need to be really high-end, because the motherboard's FSB is not being overclocked (if you do overclock)...

Sandy bridge is really the way to go compared to the older i5s and i7s...

Sandy bridge is faster clock for clock, and also being built smaller, thus being running cooler...and it overclocks more...sandy is just more cost effective than older Intel CPUs...

Intel Core i7 2600 w/ GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD3-B3 - $400

8 GB (2 x 4 GB) G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1333 - $80

CoolerMaster Hyper 212 cooler (not even OC'ing but MicroCenter has crazy deals and I'm paranoid lmao)

T-mouse,

So you took the plunge...you'll be happy with it. You got the K-version of the 2600?
