Those outside the USA may be surprised, as I was, that prohibition of alcohol sales did not die in the 1930s but is alive and well in lots of counties across the nation.

See "The Slow Death Of Prohibition": http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17291978

The vote in Williamsburg KY was in favour of serving alcohol in 100-seater restaurants and passed by just 14 votes, reports WYMT TV.

It is crazy.

I remember stopping at a hotel in KY on a drive through the state and I stopped to buy beer at a store and they looked at me like I was nuts... I had never been in a 'dry' county before. I didn't even know they existed! I ended up cancelling my stay at that hotel and drove on for another hour until I got to a county that wasn't dry.

It is odd how we act towards alcohol in the USA. We're one of the few places that has 21 as the legal drinking age. Every other country I've been to alcohol wasn't such a big deal (middle eastern countries being the exception).

her in Alabam there are still dry counties...but those numbers keep dwindling as time goes by. Now when I was back home in Hawaii, you could buy hard liquor anywhere, and on sundays and at Walmart or Sams club.....myself, i only drank alot at the gig when i was playing out, other than that it's really no big deal..now fire one up?? i'm all over that!!!!!!! and that stuff is still prohibited everywhere...except amsterdam.....i wanna go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spent two years at McConnell AFB, Wichita (volunteered for Vietnam to get out of there) in the late '60s and it was totally dry. You joined a private club, kept your booze in your car trunk, and then brought it into the club and paid for setups. This was a shocker for a kid from NY where at that time you could drink at 18. When I got to Kingsport, TN 28 years ago it was dry. Finally got liquor by the drink, which passed by ONE vote. At that point, the city took off with restaurants, etc. But the religious fanatics here in the Bible Belt still preach against the "devil's brew."

And so it goes...

In Dallas, it's not Dallas county as a whole that is dry, but certain sections of it. Growing up, I thought that was the norm. You could buy alcohol in some parts of town but not others. Funny sight to see - warehouses and such one side of the street and bars and liquor stores on the other as far as the eye can see.

For Paperman - Walnut Hill Ln. beween I-35 and Harry Hines Blvd. comes to mind.

My best friend Brian and I while in high school here in San Antonio went on a camping trip out west. We had cases and cases of beer to take with us. We planned to drink the entire time and were underage so had to purchase before hand.

The first three days was a blast. We made some.... mostly girls but a few guys and they all came over to party at night. The forth night we ran out of beer. This is when we found the country was dry.

So we went on a beer run. We met some that could buy but had to drive some 50 miles to get it. 100 mile trip. Ouch!

We get back and start drinking and around 1am when we are a bit buzzed and a bit loud.. some cops came walking up on us. We were like opps. Hahahaha

Cops says....

Do you know this is a dry country and no drinking allowed in the part?

No sir!

Can I see some id?

Yes sir.

You both are underage?

Yes sir!

We both got a PI.. public intoxication tickets $70 and had to leave the park the next day. We were like.. well if we cant drink we are going home anyway.

My parents never found out till I told them may years later. Brian’s parents just laughed. Hahahaha

Great memory!!! Pays to be underage at times.
