On 2 April, 1982, the armed forces of Argentina invaded the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands.

Following the failure to submit to a UN resolution, a British Task Force undertook military action to liberate the islands

and their population. Both sides suffered significant casualties before the Union Flag was raised again.

Today, on the 30th anniversary of the beginning of a tragic and unnecessary conflict, we remember those on both sides who fell.

Many of the Argentinian troops were conscripts, facing a highly trained and highly motivated force of professional soldiers.

It was an uneven contest and my enduring memory from the TV news after the Argentine surrender was of those poor lads shivering

in the open as POWs.

God rest all who fell and grant continuing peace in the South Atlantic.

Deejay you need to read todays Sun newspaper, a story from Captain Robert Lawrence (who was shot in the head and lost 40% of his brain) potrayed by Colin Firth in the TV movie Tumbledown, says it was a myth to say the Argies were all conscripts, most of them were better equipped then our lads, in the assault on Tumbledown mountain our soldiers had no body armour or helmets (just berets), they charged up the mountain in tempertures of -22 degrees, against an enemy who had months to prepare their defences and whose bellies were full of hot food prepared for them on the spot by mobile kitchens that still sit on the mountain today, these lads never faced conscripts but the tough 5th Marine division who had the best night vision money could buy and were trained by the Americans, so i am not having it that they were poorly trained, it is always easier to defend fortified positions then to attack them, they lost because when it came down to it we better and we were right in what we did, also we had to go alone on this, remember non of our allies? bothered to help us whereas we are always first to send troops when anyone else is in trouble.

Well said mate especially with regards our allies and love her or hate her Margaret Thatcher had more balls than any of our so called politicians today she kicked ass and believed in our armed forces..

Now today with all the cuts we will be sending our troops to fight with slingshots and catapults it makes me sick.......

I don't read the Currant Bun and would never view it as a source of fact.

If you re-read what I posted, I said many not all.

The documentary accessible via the link I posted makes it perfectly clear that Tumbledown was defended by

elite 5th Marines - that is not in dispute. However, not all the 13,000 Argie troops on the islands were 5th Marines.

Our closest ally could not intervene as it has treaty obligations to Argentina (that still exist).

There's nothing like a war victory to aid a politician, though it did not work for Winston Churchill.

Thatcher was a splendid wartime PM though, overall, an absolute disaster for the UK.

I'm about to start reading a book by the guy that exposed the News of the World's misconduct - Nick Davies:

"Flat Earth News".

I don't need a book to tell me how messed-up, distorted and false a lot of the content of the tabloid press is, though.

A reporter at one national tabloid once said to me on the phone, "If you don't talk to us, we'll make it up".

I didn't and they did!!!

We're still suffering from Thatcher's ideology today.

Hang on mate, she sent the Task Force down south to retake the Falklands. For me, that can make up for a lot of her other mistakes...

What do you reckon will happen in a while when the Argies take it over again? It will all be PC and we WON'T go to war...

Easy to say, Bosun, when you're not suffering the effects of them, mate!

She's the reason families are sitting in bed & breakfast because there's insufficient social housing available for them.

She's the reason we are being ripped off by privatised utility companies.

She's the reason that greed and personal monetary gain were elevated to the status of a religion.

She's the reason we no longer have any local coal mines.

As our navy numbers 18 surface combatant ships in total and we no longer have aircraft carriers with Sea Harriers on them,

thanks to the actions of the subsequent clowns in office, I doubt the UK could repeat the task force. As the idiots

are also sacking elite forces like the Gurkhas, our Army is also smaller and busy propping up Karzai!

That will never make up for anything that bitch did, never ever try to defend her to me, you don't live in this country, you don't know what life was like under that cow, this country is still suffering from her legacy, how does her defending a few thousand people make up for the crap she dumped on the other 55 million....but hey it got her another term as Prime Minister, which it did'nt look like she had a cat in hells chance of getting at the time (voted the most hated person on the planet even in front of Hitler at the time) so she should be Argentinas best pal really, their stupid occupation made her the legend she is today. :no If it happens again we won't be able to go to war, we ain't even got one aircraft carrier anymore, last time we took two, one which we just sold to you Aussies and we had to beg to borrow it back, why do you think the Argies are kicking up again, it's because they know we are stretched to our limits in Afghanistan and spending a fortune helping Libya and other North African countries in their petty little civil wars add to that our whole economy is fucked...we just can't afford it.

Yep I tottally agree her legacy ruined this country's economy I only mentioned her earlier because at the time she was the only one with enough balls to stand up to those bullies...

So here is the big question Who will stand up to the bullies now not our present bunch of fucked up cowards we have as politicians...

What fucking annoys me now is our Boys who died in the first conflict will have died for nothing if we hand the islands back now....Yes we are not equipped to do this and it will cost more service men and womens lives..But if we back down now where will it stop....The truth of it all is as before we will stand alone no allies at our back just us fighting on our own again.....

That's what really fucks me off we send Billions to various country's around the world for what ???

And do not take this the wrong way I love my american friends and the american people. But like our's there Government are just as fucked up and will never back the UK when it matters......

I keep hearing about this treaty the Argies have with the USA, can't remember any Argentinian forces in either gulf war in Iraq, is their any Argies helping out in Afghanistan?, all Argentina ever did was give lots of Nazi's refuge after WW2, maybe this treaty is only there to keep Sean Penn happy, from my end i can't see any point to it but i suppose someone will put me right.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inter-American_Treaty_of_Reciprocal_Assistance

The USA invoked it after 9/11 but no South American countries joined the "War on Terror" so, no, one wouldn't see any Argie troops in Afghan',

even if one believed that was a "war on terror".

Did you know that we invaded Argentina twice and lost both times? There is a huge English-speaking community in the country and even a

Welsh one, descended from miners (featured in a episode of "The Hairy Bikers" when they visited a Welsh tea room there).
