I have a new laptop that I purchased with Win 8 Pro.

I was hoping to dual boot Win 8 and Win 7 on the same machine as I had done with 7 and XP.

The new Win 8 has some boot up querts that make this set up impossible as I see it.

I'm looking for advice on how to run 7 under win 8 or dual boot.  The old easy bcd just didn't cut it.

My Equipment is a HP Envy -   Model # HP ENVY dv7-7259nr

Thanks for any help -

It can be done, I have Linux and Windows 8 on mine.

That said, why dual boat 7 and 8? XP I could understand but 7 and 8 are so similar minus the start menu. The same software and drivers work on both even. I recommend 8 though because it has much better memory management thus runs faster.

This is kinda the problem I'm facing.  There's lots of info for adding and dual booting Win 8 on your win 7 machine.  When you buy a machine that is orginally equiped with Win 8 and want to add Win 7 as the secondary OS its a problem.  The Win 8 format doesn't want to allow the installation of the Win 7 OS.

Windows 8 Pro (PC) is what I have on an HP Envy -  Quad Core.

I have a licensed copy of Win 7 and want to run both on the same machine. I don't want to downgrade or modify the Win 8 to look like Win 7.  Its a want not a need as are most things in the techy world.

Let me know if you have any ideas.  There are lots of links for adding Win 8 to any machine already running Win 7; however I have the oppisite and want to add my Win 7 (which is on its own separate HDD) into my laptop which supports two HDD.  Unfortunately the start up and what we use to call the cmos set up is configured differently when the computer comes with Win 8 pre installed.

Hi, you would be better to clean install Windows 7 and then reinstall windows 8. I think these threads may help hopefully. Windows 8 boot manager is very different to any of the previous Windows. It is better to install the earlier version first, then Windows 8. Good luck. :)

Why not just run 8? FWIW it is very similar to 7. The start screen is of course different but MS is actually going to bring back the old start screen. So far I have not even came across a driver from 7 that wouldn't work on 8 in the event a driver was missing and I have had to work on a lot of machines... I have some old P4's running 8 even because it simply ran faster vs. XP and 7 due to memory usage more efficient. I actually find 8 to have a slight performance advantage vs. 7 due to its better memory management. I do understand that some gamers will claim 7 to be faster though and I guess depending on the machine and drivers it's possible but I have not been able to duplicate it in any lab setups.

When I compared various machines that had been identical with the only difference being 7 vs 8 in any games I tested 8 had the better FPS and performance, given both OS's being on latest drivers and updates of course. Now by better I am not saying night and day difference, just a few % tops...

XP vs. 7 I could understand. Some programs simply wouldn't work on 7 from XP but I have yet to find one that doesn't run on 8 that worked on 7.

I am in the IT field if it helps my opinion any lol but I honestly say don't waste the space to dual boot, just run straight 8. Just about anything you may not like about it can be changed, including the start menu and screen until the MS patch is released.

That said, most peoples problem dual booting something else with Windows 8 has to do with the secure boot loader or different bios that it uses. These features can be disabled without hurting anything though if need be. In my case I dual boot Windows 8 and linux.

I just started messing with windows 8 and Im starting to like it. I have not tried games on it yet  but the OS is fucking fast on my old machine. IE is fast.. Chrome is fast, startup shut down. Loving the tiles as you can finds things fast. I like how you can organize it.

Im going to give it a shot as before I was hatting on it.
