So, We have the opportunity to adopt a 1 year old English Mastiff/Great Dane Mix! Anyone have experience with Dane's? We will be fostering the new guy first to make sure he and Loco get along, but my experience has been limited to Mastiff's only! The good news is that he is already some what trained as I was able to get him to Sit, give me his paws, and retrieve when we met him. :) ( If only we could get Google to do this. LOL)

ANy suggestions?

Great Danes life expectancy isn't long at all. They only live to be between 7-9 years of age. They are great big lap dogs and such a beautiful creature, but with their size comes with big health problems.

i have had a dane for the last 20  yrs they are the most gentle loving dogs you could ever have. they truly earned their name The Gentle Giant.  they do like to stay beneath your feet like a small dog but you learn to just lead with your knees to move them around.

and they think they are small enough to  sit in your  lap.   and your furniture IS their seats. so far i havent been able to break even one dane from laying on the furniture, you can break them from getting on  the beds pretty easy but not the couches and chairs. my oldest dane loves the recliner. hes to big for it but he manages

Don't get me wrong, I do love Great Danes. My wife wont let me get one though because of their size...almost had her talked into one about 6 months ago, but then she threw a fit to get another husky and my moto in my marriage is, "A happy wife is a happy life" so I gave in and bought another husky. Now we have 2 beautiful huskies.

Just be careful if your mastiff is dog aggressive. Danes are very gentle and get along with most dogs, but a mastiff might feel threatened by such a large dog and go after it. We had a dane many years ago and it quite literally wouldn't hurt a fly.

theres a kitten in the house if you are holding the kitten the oldest dane is scared to death of it but if its walking around hes fine with it. even jack russells back them into corners or higher ground

I hate a Dane try to stand up and put his paws on my shoulders once......he missed with his big ol' feet and gave me a black eye!  LOL, but yet, they are great dogs and very gentle.

Thanks for all the input. This new guy is a Mastiff Dane Mix. Loco our current lap dog (160lbs English Mastiff) still acts like a puppy! He too I would classify as a gentle Giant! Thanks for all the stories! This new Mastiff was taken from his owner. Not mistreated, the owner just did the wrong things. He is a very sweet dog and during our first visit, was following my commands and extremely playful. We plan to let Loco meet him on neutral ground. ( At the Animal Control playground) prior to making any permanent decisions!

Thanks again.

glad to see your getting him from a shelter... at least that is the impression i am reading here... not enough people get their pets from pet stores... there are many many animals being put to death (not sleep) that their only crime is not having a loving home.  Adopt!! Good job!
