welp... it's about time I made the full switch to linux.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/11/27/microsoft_encryption_nsa_spying/

I definitely will after I graduate. Cause then I won't need all these stupid programs for homework assignments that are only available on windows.

I guess i'll keep windows around for gaming though.

Yup heard about this a few days ago. The fact that the NSA is doing this overseas means that they know it would never be legal here. Makes you wonder what the next revelation to come out will be.

well... that and you know it's only the tip of the iceberg.

I'm sure there's a lot more going on that we will never know about.

That's why I don't have a facebook. Facebook is the world's largest, most successful, and most voluntarily accepted surveillance engine. And it's based out of the USA. To think that the gov isn't in bed with facebook is foolish.

Everything you type into these public forums is automatically indexed with Google.  Facebook, similarly, is a public forum over which one has greater privacy controls.

If you are that sensitive about how many push-ups you did today or what you had for lunch, that is your privilege...

There's being careful and then there's being para...holy shit..gotta go...black helicopter landing outside!

Haha, you laugh now....

It's not science fiction any more to have all your social connections, assets, and psychological characteristics mapped.

Initially it's only advertising that is driving the "harmless" survalence but it's only a matter of time and political creep (slow change of policies) before it's a lot worse than just a matter of privacy.

Some important security parts of Linux were developed by the (Inter)National Spying A**holes.

As long as you are not able to encrypt your traffic end-to-end they can see everything. And this full encryption is impossible with a WAN connection.

You can secure your E-Mails with S/MIME or PGP/GPG,

You can encrypt your internet traffic with openVPN to connect to your own server(s) or PCs of your family or friends.

But as soon as you want to visit a website you need to break out of your VPN and you are visible again.

Thinking about the Tor Network? Forget it: hijacked by NSA, GCHQ, FSB, BND..

The only way to keep your private data really private is:

Going offline...

Are you sure you want them spying on you while you're watching porn?

Tor is actually still the safest way to browse. It's not completely hacked.
