Went for a 3 day ride on the bikes in the Montana Rockies with friends this past weekend and was a great trip until...... 2.5 hours sitting in a line to get back into Canada and then once in we got hit, and hit hard by hail. Were sitting out in the middle of the prairies with no cover so we all just huddled together and got hammered, helmets still on of course.. When it finally passed (about 15 minutes) we were all soaked from head to to and our bodies felt like we were just severely beaten in a bad paintball game.. Lots of welts on our shoulders and arms and a few to the face..

Moral of the story, when you see a storm moving in fast, you cannot out run them on the bikes. Turn back or stop lol..

Anyone ever been pelted by large hail?

It could have been worse. You could have been caught out there without your air freshener.

Sounds like you got "stung" pretty good! How ironic! I was in Montana once when they got hail like that. We bet our friend's teenage son he wouldn't jump out the van we were in and run 100 feet and back. He did it, but was hurting! Hope it didn't damage the bikes!

I was out on the Bighorn River last summer and the sky got dark (2pm) and you could hear some thunder in the distance.  This particular day I decided to take my pontoon kickboat down the river instead of my drift boat, it sits close to the water and lotsa fun in the rapids. I knew I couldn't make it to the launch ramp it was like 4 river miles downstream and the sky was now a dark grayish green color . . .I have seen this before and it's not good. With the thunder there is of course lightning and taking cover under a tree under these conditions is a bad idea. I pulled the boat up on an island and tied it to a a large bush . . it was pouring like crazy now and I always have a rain jacket with me and i was wearing waders so I was mostly dry. In the summer I like to wear a straw hat like landscapers wear to shade me from the sun but today it would be my Hail shield.

The thunder was so loud now it was like a war zone and the wind was whipping I managed to crouch inside some bushes and the hail was starting to get big and then it was pounding down ping pong ball size  , , ,  ,I had to lift my rain jacket off my shoulders cuz it was kicking my ass . . .and my straw hat was getting shredded.

The sound of the hail and the thunder and the wind was intense . . . then within 60 seconds it had completely stopped . .  . . .the hail was about 4 inches thick on the ground and thicker where it had drifted. I crawled from the bushes and looked around at the destruction . .. . the berries on the bushes were completely stripped and the river was littered with leaves and small branches . . . . .. .

I decided to just row in and not fish any more (Duh!).

When I got to the ramp there were people standing around waiting and looking for family or friends that were floating the river that day. The storm was isolated to a small area about a 1/4 mile wide so most of the fisherman just got rained on but everyone could see it was a bad one.

I made arrangements with my neighbor to pick me up at 6pm at the ramp but he knew if I got caught in that storm I would be ready to go home early . . . . . .and he was right.

When my neighbor saw my hat he asked if i was alright and started busting up . . . it was funny then but when it was coming down and raising hell I gotta admit it was pretty damn scary.

So yeah  . . . . . I know what you went thru and glad you and your friends didn't get hurt . . . .don't let that keep you from visiting Montana  . . . this place rocks!.

yeah that's where this one was, I was between Carway/Piegan crossing and Cardston when this storm hit. Felt like the winds hit 70mph at least. I did actually for a moment start to worry as the stones slowly got bigger. Baseball size would kill.. We've had loads if storms this year. I blame it on the other provinces, Saskatchewan sucks and BC blows lol quite literally ;)
