When we were on Linux servers we could only run certain maps on cod5. Not a good idea.

I use linux lmde 2 mint 64 bit

Yes it has a few disadvantages in the gaming world...but it also just works and is free of microcrap / apple track your ass BS. The best thing to do is see whats needed for the games you play, and things  like direct x for some games can be an issue if they are windows / apple only versions. I play minecraft and there is no issue because there is a Linux game version.

I use debian for creating bash scripts and testing them. I do use Windows too, but I will create the bash script for Linux first and then make a windows version, or include a windows version directly in the script so that it becomes universal.

For gaming though, WINE may be helpful, but directx will be the killer here. Don't use it if you plan on gaming with new games

Damage I looked into it and it was not worth it. Do you use if for anything else.. Luinux that is?

I got Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise in xubuntu 16.04. MS Office on Linux but Outlook does not work. I also got Netflex to work in xubuntu.

To me one great thing about linux builds like Ubuntu and Lime and others.. being able to boot off the disk to test out. Great way to test a PC for issues to eliminate it being a hardware issue.

"WINE".... that the ticket.

What do you do with the bash scripts you make. Can you post one for linux and one for windows to see the difference.

Generally it will be for networking issues. The last place I worked had around 50 Linux servers (running a combination of SCO Unix, and Redhat Linux) and 200 windows servers all running Windows server 2008 R2.

Sample bash script below

Windows script

SET /A varInteger=0123456789

echo The value of varInteger is %varInteger%

Linux script

varInteger=0123456789

echo "The value of varInteger is $varInteger"

There really isn't much difference, it's just a case of remembering which is which.

That's why I write one first and then rewrite for the other.

Steam has a good choice of Linux games, but there are more for Windows and not all games will work under Linux (unless the game developers natively support it). Video drivers are improving, but they're not equal to Windows yet. Yeah, Wine and its derivatives will run some Windows software, but I've never had a need for it. The open source equivalents of most applications have been more than good enough.

I like Linux (I use Mint for PC's) as a general personal machine OS. At our house (just the 2 of us), we have Windows 10, Linux, OS X, iOS, and Android on the personal side, and my servers are BSD (FreeNAS), Linux (Ubuntu, Centos), and Windows Server 2012 R2. For gaming, it's Windows 10. You can dual-boot your PC to have your cake and eat it too. I tend to do this on my machines.

That's my pre-caffeine ramble on the topic :coffee:

Cheers!

great knowledge and advise-I was just entertaining the idea if it was possible.I only play cod4- 95 percent of the time / rarely cod 5/ and occasional world of tanks until I get sick of its pay to play advantages every-other year and go thru the uninstall reinstall thing ..

could be fun to play with and maybe in the next couple years valve/steam can make this an easy transition--thanks

steam has been working on it for over a year...

http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/

but getting devs to also make a free version to use has been an issue even for a big dog like steam

until they step up their game like ps4 (linux) did and pay them. I doubt gaming will explode on linux

OK thanks.. I see the sight little difference. % and SET /A  for Windows and $ " for the Linux side.

That is a crap load of Linux severs. Have not seen a sever room that full in over a decade.

I worked for a bank in Canary Wharf (heart of London), and in terms of physical servers there were maybe 60 or 70 that I had direct control over. All the servers were moved on to virtual machines. Each server had 192GB RAM and dual hex core CPU. Each Vm had 32GB ram and 2 cores dedicated to it. 5 VMs to a server. And there were plenty of backups and redundant servers also (LDAP replication, exchange servers in a DAG etc).

Was a nightmare to migrate everything though, took the better part of a year to go from all physical to mostly virtual.

Outside of what I managed the people that dealt with stocks, shares and bonds had their own infrastructure...never dared touch those because even a few M/S latency meant a different price for buying and selling which could be several millions of £ in business.

As for scripts, most of what I wrote was for backups, replication and such like to automate most of the processes.
