I have used Pinnacle Studio extensively as well as Cyberlink Power Director and dabbled with Adobe Premier Pro.

All have a bit of a learning curve, but for ease of use, I would probably lean towards Powerlink CyberDirector or Pinnacle Studio.

But if yo're looking for complete control and awesome workflow, none are better than Adobe Premier.  All you need is a thick wallet.

You can do simple stuff with VLC. You should have VLC as your video player anyway but it does simple editing.

If you want free, virtualdub will work. But you will probably have to find and download the x264 codec depending on what your video capture uses.

Also, go here. More information that you can possibly want. Including a list of software and their benefits/disadvantages. The software page below assumes you are using one of the more mordern and advanced codecs and containers and not just simple avi.

Sony Vegas and/or Adobe Premier come to mind as great softwares. The fact that there are so many tools and customization makes it my top go to software.
