And now, as we can see, there is nothing they can do about it. Even the increase in the clock frequencies of their top-of-the-line six-core LGA1366 Gulftown processors doesn’t really help. As our tests showed, the recently launched Core i7-990X Extreme Edition processor with maximally increased clock speed can only compete against Core i7-2600K in a few individual cases – in those few applications that create heavy load that could be well-paralleled.In fact, the most expensive processor in the market, the 1000-dollar six-core Core i7-990X Extreme Edition, can be titled the today’s fastest CPU only during video processing and transcoding, final rendering and a few specific tasks, such as encryption and batch image processing. As for the majority of general-purpose applications, including contemporary 3D games, it yields significantly to Core i7-2600K. Although the latter CPU has a smaller L3 cache, it can boast much higher relative performance per core. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-2600k-990x_13.html#sect0 This is my new build Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I72600K MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard .G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL 300gd raptor H/D 480gtx SC V/C 8800gtx S/C Awards

Thought about the 2600k originally, but looking at price vs performance gained I felt the 2500 would do everything I needed. Parts are arriving tomorrow, then we'll see how big of a disaster I can create by putting it all together.

However, multitasking will be quicker and smoother. Plus, loading the games themselves and game levels will be quicker. Less graphical anomalies in games as well. With more memory comes greater graphical detail levels in games too. Why would more system memory affect graphics performance? Because graphics cards can reserve system memory for texture storage and such. My system's GTX 570 has 1280MB of its own, yet still reserves 2815MB of system memory, for a total of 4095MB of available graphics memory. I only got it -it was on sale Awards

RAM is really affordable these days, but when a price hike hits, prices are going thru the roof...so nice move. Awards

Thanks to my wingman mofo for a lot of assistance...hours and hours of assistance. Oh, and Dell; a hearty FU. Halfway into the rebuild, with the insides of my PC spread all over my office, Dell bit me in the ass. Parts of the case/components appear to be proprietary just for Dell. So, after multiple attempts at some workarounds, and 2 trips to CompUSA in between coaching rugby games, I added a Coolermaster 690 V.2 case and a new 850W power supply. Running smooth at 4.33 Ghz. total rebuild time, about 13 hrs.

Am sure you will be real happy with your new rig. Glad its all running sweet now. Paul.

Some of it is ok, but i don't like it when they make a special power supply connector that is only made by them. Some of the older Dells tried the ole BTX form factor, which is a pain to upgrade some stuff, and RD ram which is wierd too. But they have been getting away from some of that. They don't make much anymore, PSUs, some motherboards and cases....but it seems like they are getting away from motherboards and ram etc... I was gonna upgrade a XPS400 one time, and quickly squashed that idea. lol. Seemed easier to start from scratch. I recently worked on a couple year old Alienware (bought by dell) and it had XFX motherboard and corsair ram....nothing dell...lol. They couldnt figure out the BSOD the guy was getting. Replaced his mobo, ram, psu, and vid card. lmao. It still blue screened. I switched my corsair ram with his (different model, timings) and no more BSOD. I thought that was funny. He got some free new stuff anyway. Awards

Then just reloading everything from my backup drive. Should have been an easy night.

I used one of my western digital 500 GB for storage with a 1.5 TB external for back up. The 60 GB SSD is a bit small, but it will do for now. I'll upgrade that next year. At some point I'll upgrade the GTX 275 graphics card and possibly a new internal HDD for storage. My only problem is my external HDD keeps dropping out and the comp can't find it.
